I have a nice 4010 diesel that I am planning to use as a chore tractor. I know that the PTO stub shaft is not the greatest setup. How much stress will running a 7ft bush hog on this unit be? What about a 10ft rigid or 15ft bat wing? I intend to use only the 540 shaft. |

| I would not use a 15' and probably not a 10' on 540 because of torque and shock loads. |

| It won't be much difference to the tractor, but when you put a 15' with a 540 shaft on it behind a 4440 size tractor you have trouble keeping the mower drive line together,,the 1,000 RPM system absorbs the power better. That is one of the reasons for 1,000 RPM only in larger HP tractors. |

| It"s really not what you run on the PTO,,it"s keeping the stub shaft "tight",,To start out on the right track I would replace the 4 3/8" cap screws with new grade 8 bolts with a dab of loc-tite on them,,and maybe even go with new dowel pins too, when this stub shaft works loose it lets the shift pin work in and out damaging the cross pin inside, keeping the slip in the PTO shaft on the implement lubed up good helps too, as you go through the field the movement of the shaft going in and out will create "push & pull" on the stub shaft as well as the u-joints,all these things work against the 4 3/8" cap screws. |
