I've just gotten the timing and ignition issues all straightened out on my LUC power unit, but now its not drawing gas up into the cylinders. This engine has been sitting for years but looks to be in good condition. I've got a good flow of gas to the carb bowl but after cranking and cranking I'm not getting any gas drawn up to the cylinders. I put my thumb over the plug holes and seems to have compression. Would a slightly stuck valve cause the fuel to not be sucked up? Would it help if I belted the engine to a tractor belt pulley to turn it over faster? |

My LA tractor has that problem if it sits a long time. Gas will drip out the carb. weep hole but not make it up to the cylinders. Last time I had to pull out the spark plugs a put a little in the cyl. after it gets going it is fine and even restarts days later ok. I think maybe the rings get dry and don't seal it off good ?

I would say your problem is in the carb. The M-S carb on the L-series is very hard to clean properly, especially the tiny passage at the bottom of the main passage. Get a drawing of this carb and clean it properly. Soaking it in cleaner usually won't do the job; it has to be mechanically cleaned using the proper drill bits. If you don't feel competent to do the job, give it to a pro.

If you can hold the compression back with your finger while someone else cranks, the combustion chambers might not be sealed up enough to create enough suction to draw the fuel into the cylinders. Had that very same situation with a VAC Case. Everything checked out OK on that thing except for the compression which was pretty darned low. Finally gave up on starting it because it just didn't have enough lung capacity left to draw the fuel into the cylinders. Jim

After cranking the engine for a short while I decided to pull the rubber air cleaner hose off of the carb and when I pulled it back there was a decent amount of gas that poured out of the hose. Should I assume that theres a plugged passage in the carb then?

Is the carb clean ? Did you clean all passages with a wire or drill bit ? A stuck valve could cause some problems but I don't think it would cause it not to suck gas into the cylinder. It would be low on compression in that cylinder if stuck open. I would also remove valve cover to varify that all valves are working properly. I have even dumped a quart of oil over the valves of an engine thats been sitting for a long time as your LUC engine as..Good Luck.
