I posted the other day and got some good advice about the injector pump on my JD 4230. It would not start when it was hot and had reached a point where it wouldnt start "cold" unless i poured ice water on the injector pump. The injector pump was in bad shape.. I had it rebuilt and they replaced the head/ rollers etc (stanadyne DM model). I got it back on the tractor and it started right up.. Starts great from a cold start, runs better and seems to have more power now, but it still will not start after it has been running for a few minutes. If I let it cool down for a half hour and pour cool water on the pump it will start right up. I dont think it is low compression because it runs strong and only starts after the pump is cooled down. The starter turns the engine over plenty fast to start. What would cause this? Thanks for the help the last time and any advice you have this time. |

I would quit pouring cold water on it. It may seize it up as the clearances are pretty close.

Are you sure they replaced the head, sounds like that issue.

Yep, They replaced it. They saved the old parts to show me. I'll check the fuel line to see if its getting hot. Can a diesel vapor lock?

Just a WAG, how is the fuel line from the tank to the pump (or whatever plumbing there is). Near the exhaust or too close to the block ?? HTH

I was told that a weak transfer/lift pump might cause this problem because it is causing the injector pump to work harder. Has anybody had any experience with this?

No experience at all, just thought I might be able to help with my comment. Best of luck with your problem.
