I acquired a 4430 with known hydraulic issues. I
have been trying to move it but the loader is on
the ground and it will not raise. I have tried the
hydraulic lever in all different positions. The
clutch slips and the two speed in the quad range
doesn't work. Every now and then if I press the
brakes I can get something from them. The PTO
engages every time I turn it on but it probably
would slip if it was under a load. It doesn't make
a difference if the PTO is on or off. It also
doesn't steer at all. If it helps, this tractor
has a JD loader on it that has 1 hose connecting
to the back couplers and the return hose connects
to a round protruding object below the deck on the
starter side of the tractor. Does anyone have any
suggestions as to what is wrong with this 4430?
Thanks to all in advance.

Remove the top link mounting, then remove the plug hiding under it, reach in with pliers and "try" to pull the trans pump drive shaft out, my guess is you won"t be able to,,me believing this 4430 to be a Quad range, I thinking the pump has failed twisting the shaft off....

If the shaft is twisted off, would it have a pto that engages or brakes that sometimes work?

Possibly from clutch drag, it may not be twisted clear off but the shaft could be rounded letting the pump work just a bit,,but it sounds like trans pump failure, it is a Quad range correct..

First thing is to do is change hyd filter(AR75603),clean sump screen & check traction & pto clutch pressures on LH side to the rear of battery. Loader will not operate unless scv lever is moved the correct direction and then ind lever activated and frt pump is putting out 1700+ psi. You could also remove center link bracket and plug, then pull trans hex drive shaft out and check for wear in trans pump drive area.

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see

b&d

A quad-range trans has one rear hyd filter and a powershift has two rear hyd filters.

Just making certain what we were dealing with.
It would do no harm either to install a T in the
high pressure line and avoid the SCV connection.
A complete flush of the hydraulic oil from
tractor and loader would not hurt either. Who knows
what all has been dumped and accumulated in there
over the past 37+ years.
The trans oil pump will be at least "tired" .

Loader oil is probably returning to a ported filter cover part # T31170.

Is there one or two oil filters on the transmission?

You are right. The oil is returning to a ported filter cover.
