I don't think Polk is going anywhere soon and neither is McGrew. People are obviously paying McGrew's prices every day, or they'd be closed. I would guess that the best prices probably do come from the guy parting out a couple of tractors in the back yard. His overhead is next to nothing, but so is his selection. Where are you going to find the kind of inventory that they have in New Paris? They usually have what you need. No one is holding a gun to your head MAKING you buy from them. I've paid a lot for some items, and have been surprised at how much less expensive the next one is. It all averages out in the end. It boils down to sometimes they are the only one that has that part you need. If you want/need it bad enough, you pay for it. It's YOUR choice.

As far as Polk's auction, I think they do a great job. Ask the guy selling that tractor how he feels about Dennis "whining" about the price being too low. I've been to a lot of their auctions. It works. I can't say much about them buying tractors back but I suppose it's no different than bidding against anyone else. The high bid will win.

I and many others really look forward to their Spring and Fall sales each year. I've bought and sold at Polk's and will continue to do so for a long time. Nobody's forcing me.

On ebay I bought what were called NOS parts from them for my LA a while back. No original packaging, they were oil and rusty, did not look NOS to me. I really felt like a POS after that transaction. I stay away now especially since their stuff is made of gold, or the price makes it seem that way.

If you like hearing Polk cry about his tractors not bringing enough money, you will have a good time. If you like buying tractors that have been striped and the have to buy the parts, you will have a good time. If you like Polk's flunkies running your bid up, you will have a good time. If you like seeing Polk buy back over 50% of the tractors, you will have a great time. I'd stay home and wait for a real auction.

Been There done that, The most professional and organized auctions ive ever been to, As far as the parts tractors, Mcgrew will buy them all or try to and then haul them across the street to his parts lot, Parts tractors sell higher than complete running tractors in comparison. For instance, Mcgrew bought a 430 standard in the parts row last spring, motor stuck, shot tires, average tin, paid $4500, then the next day they sold a running 430 standard they drove through the sale building, run good with spin out rims for $5100, I think mcgrew is there to show off myself. But nothing but praise for the polk auction company.

I can't figure Mcgrew out.I've advertised parts on ebay for half what Mcgrew was asking, and didn't sell mine.

Some companies (or individuals) allow their silly egos and greed to get completely out of control once they get a taste of some profit.
They are trying to control the market by buying up everything and they are trying to set the prices by raising them to unrealistic levels.
Seen it happen too many times, no seems to one remember the Roman Empire when they could really use a history lesson.

Many years ago I bought (from Polk) the electrical socket that mounts on the side of the battery boxes on the numbered series. The part from Polk was worse than my original. I watched their auction a couple times at the JD EXPOs and I wasn't impressed.

I attend dozens of auctions every year. In my estimation Polk is not one of the top tier auctioneers. His games are pretty well known and obvious to anyone that knows what to look for. One thing any person needs to be aware of when attending an auction with intention to bid is this: always see who is bidding against you. If two bids don't get an item back away. They will get back to you if they want you to bid again. And always listen for a number to see who got the item. If it is some obscure even number, a low number or an abnormally high number odds are it is either a bogus number or an "in house" deal. You can usually tell. Stop bidding a few times and see how the auction changes. Mike
