so i finally tore into the tranny on the 2010 to fix the loss of high range gears. got torn down and the only thing that appeared worn was the high range synchro drum. i replaced it and put the whole mess back together (along with rebuilding the shift quadrant). Now it will go into high range but it won't stay there for more than 20 feet.

below is a picture of the top shaft. would like any thought if there are additional parts to replace.

thanks,

paul

Another thing to check is how worn the inside of the shifter fork is where it encloses the syncronizer. If worn too wide it can let the syncronizer separate causing shifting problems.

Was into a 2510 a number of years back for the top shaft. I couldn't keep that beggar working...I had installed a top shaft kit from Deere which amongst other parts included the shifter assembly that sits over the syncro drum. I got to the point that I could split that tractor in a half hour (funny how you work faster when mad). Finally discovered that the shifter had been machined wrong and wouldnt "throw" that drum far enough. Long story short I would have a look at the shifter parts. I had always admired the 2510. It has been 15 years since I had that problem and can still hear tha awful sound of it coming out of gear whenever I see one. I would still buy one but only after a real thorough test drive, Bob

I agree with what Cliff stated also. I agree that 2010's trans are different from from all the remaining JD syncro-range trans.

Yes Jim, that's the line of thought I was on,, but Cliff says the 2010 is different,,I'm going with Cliff's statement,,and I hope I never have a 2010 apart again to prove it :)

I was thinking that the double drum syncro was low & reverse also and the disassembled syncro was high range. But Tim has had hands on on syncro-range trans lately and I haven't in a long time.

On the 2010 it is low and reverse together and high to the rear as originally pictured. On 3010 on up to I think 55 series it is high/low together with reverse separate. That said look close at the collar splines (#31) for wear. Also too much end play on the gear. Does it jump completely out of gear or does it slip and grind?

#31 did not appear to be worn at all. it will move about 20feet grind for 5 seconds or less and be completely out of gear.

Did you inspect the rollers(parts key #11) and the grooves that rollers operate in the shifter(parts key #18)?? Also did you check shifter dent spring and detent(parts key #10 or 26 depending on SN)?? Did you check the 4 balls & springs(parts keys 34 &35 in next photo) in the high range retainer???

I don't know why this photo won't appear.

The collar and drum that you seem to be pointing out in the picture is for reverse.....you should go through the hi/low drums and collar also....

thanks for the response,

i did not take the retainer / blocker off (parts key 33) and inspect it. it seemed to function just fine but it apparently cannot hold the high range in gear.

id did inspect the cam, forks, and detent spring and they appeared ok......however this is my first synchro range tranny so i have no reference point as to what too much wear is.

Tim S. if you could please clarify your post. The synchro drum that is off the shaft is listed as the high range syncrho in both my svc manual and jd parts.com. The forward 2 synchros control low range and reverse....but that is how i read the manual.... like i said this is my first synchro rebuild.

many thanks,

paul

I will double check on the 2010 parts,,But on all other sychro's the reverse is at the rear of the shaft on it's own,,fortunately I have not had a 2010 trans down for a while,,but I'm still thinking I am right about this...
