John Deere 310B backhoe

Just bought a Deere 310B backhoe and have several questions.Just did a complete fluid and filter change. I cannot find the transmission screen that everyone talks about. Can someone describe where that thing is? The hydraulics seem quick but seem underpowered. The rear stabilizers do not lift the back very well. When any function bottoms out the tractor does not even make a grunt. Are the feliefs bypassing early? Also, with the shuttle shift should you use the clutch of just throw the lever in forward? Thanks for the help!

Clutch is not necessary to change direction but is sometimes easier on the driver if inexperienced. With closed center hyds you will not hear engine labor or relief valve as the pump maintains 2250 psi all the time. Check your standby pressure with a gauge to make sure it is right.

MsHaug,
Do a search in this John Deere forum, search the word: sump screen. I posted a picture of where you will find the screen...it is in a thread called 310 Hydraulic Accumulator...took me some time to finally locate the screen...it is behind the hose of the horizontal hydraulic fluid transmission, have to unscrew the 1 inch? rubber hose fitting......not an easy find. Post back if you can't find it and I will repost picture for you. Best to find someone that can pressure test your system to diagnose...
I always clutch, just flip the lever down on the clutch, so you only have to half clutch (if you have one), figure the easier I take it on my machine, the longer she will last...I'm not making any money with mine...

Yes, same here I just purchased it for my own ranch. I am not familiar with backhoes. I have several ag tractors but a backhoe has a lot more moving parts. I want to make sure everything is working properly before I put it to use. I will try and find that thread on here. I am new to this site as well. Thanks for your help! Matt

About the lack of hyd power I'd suggest to check the stand-by pressure and set it to 2400 psi. The lower photo of the sump screen isn't from the 310B PC but it will give you a better idea of it's location.

I would like to find the engine side covers for this backhoe does anyone have a parts tractor with those on it? its also missing the cover on the back of the tractor for the rear hydraulic controls. I think that one is just a flat plate. Thanks for your help. I did find the screen today. Matt

1-800-522-7448 is a grand place to start for accurate info. Operator and service manuals there. Parts manual online at the JD web site.
Be wary of previous tinkerers. Few seem aware of closed center systems and will install replacement open center valves. Or plumb aux equipment with open center routing.
There is weenie little screen on the front pump inlet.
Use the proper Deere by-Gard oil. Without the proper friction modifiers and additives .She will shift rough and tear the friction material off the backing plates.

Yes I bought the John Deere hy-gard oil as recomended as well as all the john deere filters. The screen I pulled out of the transmission was very clean. The valves on this hoe looks original so I doubt anyone changed any but I will keep that in mind. Thanks
