What is the purpose of the coil of wire which is in between 6Volts that goes to the on/off switch and Red lead up to the coil low voltage side. I am assuming that this is the resistor that is discussed with XB Distributor. |

| Just guessing, but that coil looks just like those found in a magneto. I dought if a mag developes the wattage that a 6 volt battery would. I am sure if you wired it up without the resistor it would give a good hot spark but wouldn't last long. |

| | And to add to what John T and Buck eye al said, When the XB was put on a 12 v. tractor ( the A for example) an extra EXTERNAL resistor was added at the power stud. This was absolutely notorious for not working right, and burning out coils. The XB (according to Glenn) was really designed for 6 v. systems, and use on 12V systems with the extra resistor was sort of a hack. Kurt |

How can a hard, wire resistor fail to a lesser resistance? If they fail, it's an open. Otherwise, physics as I know it, has been rewritten.
Thousands were run on Model "A"s with no problem. The PROBLEM was when farmers broke a hook lead and kept shortening them, and got less and less resistance, or, they deleted the resistor entirely at the first ignition switch change. An XB will work fine, if you keep everything true in the circuit. I prefer Delco's, but ran a Wico XB for the first 40 years on our "A". 40 years is tough beef over. |

| | Yeppers, they (XB's) were used on some early B's, which, were indeed 6 volts.......The literature from Glen you sent shows an X7350 inline resistor for use on 12 volt. John T |

Re: Wico XB Distributor - resistor why? in reply to bjh2915, 08-10-2012 13:42:41
|
| | Short answer: The resistor is there to limit the current through the main coil. The main coil of the XB distributor is designed to work with a rather low voltage. Well less than even 6 volts. Withiout this resistor which can be tailored for whatever system voltage a tractor has it will pass too much current, overheat and burn out the coil. The resistor is therefore added to reduce the current passing through the main coil to a safe (for the coil) level. Remember, all electrical devices are manufactured with one common ingredient. They all have at least some smoke in them & once you let enough of that factory installed smoke out of them they're no longer any good! That resistor helps keep the factory installed smoke in the coil! |

| Thanks for all the inputs. This resistor is a continuous piece of wire, wound up to look like a coil. I can see where it could easily be shortened because it broke and little by little it got shorter with less resistance. Love the smoke story! |
