I am finishing up my restoration on a 1939 H and I have a fuel leak
Problem #1
The 3W valve will not cut the fuel off completely It has a slow leak into the carb and also backs into the small tank. I have the nut tight and new felt packing.
Problem #2
The Gland Fittings on the fuel line continue to leak at the 3W valve Very little maybe one drop every two hours but enough to mess up the new paint. Can I put some type of sealer on the face of the Gland? I have thread compound on the threads Thanks Jerrel

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see

Problem #1:

Best way I have found is to lap them, and if that is not enough, I cut two notches for o-rings. Did that to my first all-fuel, a '42 "H" back around '78. Stops leaks and drips dead. I open the carburetor drain, catch the fuel, dump it in the tank as the engine dies, then let the drain open until the next time.

Problem #2:

If the glands and nuts have been strained hard and deformed over the years, I build new lines out of steel brake line and silver (or high lead solder if you have the steel really really clean)new glands on the ends, available from Roberts Carb. Long way to fix it, but it's factory new.

Hey Jerry,
I've gotta agree with 41 Frank. The best way to stop the seepage is to use a good screw in type fuel bowl which positively shuts off the fuel. The quarter turn style simply leak by. Then run the tractor out of fuel as intended. With the fuel shut off this way the three way can be tightened up so it won't leak and forget running it on the small tank. I put a little diesel fuel in mine to keep them from rusting. Good Luck!

The late Pat Browning has a fix for the 3-way valve, got to JDHPubs.com. He has some great articles for all JD "H".

There is a product that I use from Dow Corning called Molykote 111. It is a non-hardening silicone that resists gasoline. Works good to seal the bulb gasket even using the old gasket. Helps to lube & seal gas line fittings too. McMaster Carr has it.

On that valve perhaps some valve grind compound and lap lap lap it down. Once I get one so it dont leak I wouldnt ever dream of turning it as I dont ever use the little tank anyway.
