I tried to move a rear wheel out using the rack and pinion. I backed off the three cap bolts but found the two jacking bolts hard to turn. I decided to first take them right out and grease them up. Got one out okay; the other backed out the point where it turns, but won't come out or even go back in! I'm afraid I might damage the threads if I start forcing. Any suggestions? |

| Get those Jack Bolts back in and tighten them down..usually, you need MORE than a 3/4" Breaker bar (Pipe on the end) to shove the wedge out.. THEN..IF the pinion will not turn, take the Wedge completely out (wheel Jacked-Up), with the pinion on top and the pinion notches on top, rotate the entire wheel enough to allow the wheel to be maneuvered in or out, to where you want it...then, re-install the Wedge.. | | When we put new tires on "Vernon" our 56 Model 70, used the same method you described to move the wheels in.
Used a penetrate several days in advance on the cap screws, jack screws, bolts, pinion and sleeves.

Cleaned up the axle with a grinder and round brush then sprayed on some clear coat.
Cleaned up both the pinion half sleeve and the key half sleeve.
Cleaned up the wheel.

Also used the same method to move one wheel with a "stuck/frozen" pinion on "Big John" our 55 Model 70 diesel several years ago. |

Neither one of jack bolts is intended to screw out of hub before removing a c-clip(snap ring) from their ends. Try using a pipe against the wedge with the loosened bolts or hit the end of the axle squarely with a BIG sledgehammer.

| | when I was having trouble with a 4430 hub, the dealer told me use lots of penetrating oil, tighten up the jack bolts, and then hit the end of the axle with a sledge hammer. And it worked. I always put a coat of never-seize on the axle, wheel and wedge. Gives you a fighting chance of loosening it with the jack bolts next time. With your jack bolt, you may have the remains of that c-clip jammed into the threads. Good luck! |

| Go back a few pages, or to the archives, where we"ve talked about cutting a pipe in a certain way, then using that and a BFH to loosen the moveable wedge. |
