I've been having a lot of problems with my Wico XB distributor. I can't seem to get a spark from it and seems to me that the coil might be bad. I purchased a new one some time ago and decided to take out the old one. Much to my surprise the old one has three coming out of it and a tap for the distributor cap. The new one only has two wires and a tap. The old one has black, red and a fine wire which connect to the same place that the red wire connected to. And that is one end of the wound resistor. The new one only has a black (going to the points) and a fine wire (no red one) which should go to the resistor. In addition, I can't get the two metal cores to fit tight together in the new coil. There is an air gap. Old one fit snug.
I've had several statement like "get rid of the WICO XB and put a different distributor in like from a 50. Is this possible? Any comments on this. What about putting in a Mag instead? And what about the coil wiring? What do you think happened to the red lead?
I've got to go slow. This is driving me crazy.

The XB will work great if everything is perfect. That being said, it is not very robust, and many things can go wrong. I rebuilt one and used it for about a year on my '51 B before I switched it out for a mag. It worked well, but I just like mags.

I still have the XB, and I will pop the cap off when I have a chance tomorrow and will take a look at the coil wires.

I think the core for the coil is normally installed with wedges to keep it tight.

Switching to an XH mag is simplicity itself, and it will work well. Same can be said for switching to a Delco distributor. The Delco has an external coil, and you will need the bracket for that.

Still having trouble with this one. The core is for flux transmittal across the winding. It's iron core verses air core (no core stuffed inbetween) I see why they won't touch each other when I put them in the new coil. The new coil is black and is for a Mag and not a distributor. Slight difference in size. I've got another coil on order. It looks like me low side is open.
Can you verify the wire connections for me?

I have a black, red and fine thin wire and of course the tab. I'm rebuilding it all over again. The guy who supposedly fixed it, said he put a new cap in. Well once I told it all apart I can see that the cap is rusted. Might still be good but it sure is not new cap that he installed and now I don't trust anything he says.

About the Delco. I've seen pictures. Doesn't look like it would connect the same way to the tractor. Now I have a bolt on top and on the bottom. I don't see that on the delco? Any thoughts

Bill

A Delco for a two cylinder tractor will bolt right on. The mag coil won't work for your XB, as you have found out. I will let you know the wire hook up when I get the chance to look at the one I have.
