The drive pin came loose last year and I discovered it was broken and the hole it fits into in the pulley had been damaged. The tractor hadn't been working hard and I believe this damage must have occurred with the previous owner. I welded up the pulley hole and ground it out carefully to get a tight fit with the new pin. Well, the pin came loose again yesterday, again, with not much load. Perhaps the pin is an interference fit on the pulley (has to be hammered in)? Has any one successfully made this repair without going to a machine shop? Thanks. Peter |

Yes, it is a press fit into the pulley boss.

Well, that depends on how steady you are and the quality of your drill press, or preferably, a small mill/drill unit. On some pulleys, there are three equal bosses, so if you have a bad hole in the original boss, you can redrill on one of the other yet to be used boss lobes. If you only have one boss, you either weld it shut so that you can redrill, or move up to an oversized pin. That way, you can redrill the operating sleeve pin hole to that new pin size, or use a bushing, or weld it shut and go with the standard pin, BUT, you have to be very careful to locate those two holes dead on top of one another, so that the sleeve slides in and out along that pin without binding. I use a rod like Muggy Weld for the filling of thew hole, since you need machinability. Tig might work, too.
Not sure if or who sells the oversized pin these days, if at all, but the original I think was a 7/16" x 2 1/4" dowel pin, so you probably have room to go to 1/2". OR, you could have a 1/2" pin ground down to 7/16" to match a standard hole in the sleeve, and punch the new hole in your pulley to 1/2", but it must be a good press fit into that pulley blind hole.
This is the weaest link in the drive, so you need to get this fixed right, and it will work fine for years again.
Or...you can look for a decent used pulley. |

| Many thanks F-I-T for your detailed and comprehensive reply. Based on your comments I now think I'll take it to a m/c shop and get it done properly. |
