Those engines run on fairly low oil pressure. If the oil pressure is too high, it could force oil by the rings causing it to smoke. I think white smoke would be another problem altogether. Might want to take the antifreeze out of it and run plain water until you find the cause of the white smoke. Just a thought.

As Bob Harvey mentioned, white smoke is usually a sign of water, but blue smoke is definitely from oil.

It"s possible that your valve guides are worn; they"re easily checked now that you"ve opened and disassembled the engine. Valve guides are supposed to be 0.377/0.376" diameter, and valve stems are to be 0.372/0.371" diameter, for max/min clearances of 0.004 to 0.006 inches. If there is significantly more clearance, it is possible the intakes could be sucking oil and causing smoke. However, smoking from loose valve guides usually lessens under load and increases at idle (when the manifold vacuum increases). Bad rings will usually cause smoke more under load than at idle.

Have you checked your oil rings (assembled correctly if of the 3-piece configuration) and that the holes in the oil ring groove of the piston are not clogged with carbon?

How about end clearance of the rings? Although there is no ring groove in the cylinder, is the piston clearance correct? (Did someone ream out the ring groove previously and thus left the impression that there was no ring groove for the next person to open the engine; therefore, the bore is "good"? (as-new clearance, skirt-to-cylinder is supposed to be about 0.004".)

At this point, since you have the engine torn down, I'd suggest you start measuring and rebuild the engine to the proper specifications.
