I got a '48 or '49 A here. When I run it around the driveway only a few minutes it starts smoking out the vent, around the clutch and flywheel quite a bit and not even working the tractor hard. I did a compression test and it has about 65 pounds and holds it good on both sides. Is the engine weak enough to make it smoke this bad at that pressure or is there another issue and if so what could it be? Thanks |

| This may sound stupid, but I have a 44 A that was doing the same thing and I found the timing was way off. It didn't fix it 100%, but it was a 98% cure |

| If you're really luck the rings are just gummed up and stuck, check the stuff the other guys recommended, lube it up and work her some while keeping a careful watch the oil level. Might not hurt to treat your fuel with Seafoam or Marvel Mystery Oil and see if she gets any better. |

| | 65 lbs sounds low to me unless you have an allfuel engine with the original low compression pistons. Sounds more like blow-by to me from tired rings and/or worn cylinder walls. Certainly worth checking it again with another gauge and checking out the ventilator fan and tube as others have suggested. Kurt |

| | 65 pounds with the trottle plates open or closed when Checking?? If that measurement is with the plates open it's pretty weak. Also there is a crankcase ventaltion pump at the rear of the fan shaft & just ahead of the govener box. Make SURE! it's working & Make SURE the Pipe running up to the Carb inlet is Clean Free of Crudd. Those are a couple things I'd Check 1st. |

| Hey Bard, If the vent pump up by the fan is original or the tractor has had a lot of use it's probably in need of repair. The springs and vains are probably broken or gummed up. Check the obvious stuff first as rla says but it's probably not that easy. Good Luck! John |
