Ok I went ahead and took off the sheet metal and the radiator so I could clean it up and sand a few more areas and I still can't get the fan shaft out. I have it all broke down and everything taken off except the governor. I have both the IT manual and the parts book and can't figure out what screws I need to remove to get it to slide out. when I try to force it a little it acts like it is being held on my some sort of spring action. Anyway which bolts do I take off to get the governor off if that is the next course of action I need to take? Thanks |

Sounds like the fan shaft bevel gear is not wanting to come through the govener case because there is probably some rust built up there. Just keep working it around and it will come out. I had one on a 49 A do the same thing. Dave

Did you lift it in the front? It sits down over that cross member with a little tab that holds it there.

Thanks for the replys. It is a 1949 JD A. I did remove the two bolts on front of the fanshaft to be able to lift it up. You are probably right about the rust. The reason I took off the radiator and water piping is that I probably have about 3 lbs of rust inside it as well. I will keep working at it. Thanks

Grab ahold of the fanshaft and wiggle it or shake it, it should come loose from the gov. with the nuts and bolts removed.

Never removed one from an A but I removed one from my 51 G, I did not have to remove the governor.

To remove the governor, you need to taker all the bolts out around the base. The governor is on dowel pins and needs to come straight up. The fan shaft and governor should both come off together. I'd check the timing marks too before you take it off.

Also, be careful of the little square oil pump coupler when you remove (or move) the governor.

Assuming the bolts are out of the bracket that holds the end of the shaft nearest the radiator, that little cover on the front side of the governor should come off. They get pretty stuck after all those years, but a little screwdriver should pop that right off.
