Recently found out that a family member is willing to sell my Grandaddy's 1952 (S/N B291140) John Deere B. I have fond memories of this tractor, and would like to make a fair offer, but don't have any idea as to a price. Can any one look at these pictures and help me come up with a fair offer? They also have a #5 mower and a 2 way plow. I really have no need for either implement, but may have to take the package to get the tractor. They use the tractor around the farm, so I assume it runs without issues. It looks like some leaking is going on, but I'm not a mechanic so I can't really address those issues. Any help you can offer would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance!

That leakage in the back could be from years of the spillage that comes out of hyd lines when there taken out after useage. Id near wager thats what it is. I had a 50 B as a kid, and I remember when wed use it on the #5 mower that it would splat a bit of oil when the lines were released

Nice straight unpainted and non-cobbled tractor for the age. Orig lettering and all.Even has all three white faced guages like they came with. Since no-one can put a sentimental value an it (at least not with clear concience) then your offer should only have to reflect current market value as a total stranger would be expected to pay. With that in mind and also the fact that the antique bread&butter tractors market is in the well right now , a fair offer would be (in my opinion) $800 -$1200. Immediately noticable expences would be a matching rear tire ($450) a seat cussion ($35) a muffler ($50-$75)then take the power washer to it and clean it up and keep it just the way it is. Everything is negociable. Just make sure you get it!RB

About 25 years ago I bought my grandfather's tractor. I had to pay more than market value to get it but I wanted it and I'm glad I bought it. I rebuilt it and used it around the place for several years. I then restored it and it has won Best of Show a time or two.

Your B is a 1951. I have 297021 which was my great grandfathers new. After 24 years I found it and was able to buy the tractor for 800 bucks. It did not run but was not stuck. Mine was simply parked in a barn and forgotten about. Carb, bearings for everything, manifold, seats, a few gears and other items would up costing just over 4000 bucks to make it mechanically "perfect". Running I would say 1500 to 2500 depending on the condition plus sentimental value to you. They made 350,000 of these things, they are not rare with the options I see here.

It also depends heavily on where you live. Check out Craigslist or this website's classifieds for tractors in your area.

Looks like a pretty straight, original, tractor. While I agree with what others have said in terms of it's value at about $1,000, I am a sentimental person. And if I had the opportunity to by my grandfathers tractor, and wanted it, I would likely pay pretty good money to get it, far more than I would any other tractor that was it's equal. Yes, there are 1,000's of those John Deere tractors out there, but only one was your grandfathers. I have quite a few tractors, and I use most all of them and update my users from time to time by trading them or selling them, but there are three on my farm that are not for sale. Period. The reason, they were my grandfather's and I'll never be able to replace them if I ever once let them go. Now, to answer your question. I would hope your family members will be fair and not take advantage of you because you'd like to have your grandfather's tractor. I believe $1,000 is a fair price, but if I was in your position, and I had the money, I know I'd go $2500 if I was forced to by greedy relatives, and not feel bad about it. (I might have ill feeling towards them, but I'd still keep in mind this purchase could have been a once in a lifetime opportunity.) Many may disagree, but that's my thoughts.

I'd guess around $1000 would be good. I bought a 52 water pump B about 9 months ago taht needs a few things and ran for $925 at auction. Because it belonged to your granddad I would give a little more for it. There may not be another one out there that you can say that about if he didn't have any more tractors. I have one of the unstyled A tractors my granddad drove when he was a child. Good luck!!

Depending on where you are located I'd like to see some pics of the mower and plow. I may be interested in both of them if you do not want them.

Chris

I won't venture anything on the price but it does look like it's been shedded and well cared for. The leaks are seepage that happens over the years and isn't anything to worry about unless you plan to turn it into a trailer queen. The ser # looks like a 51 but it really doesn't matter much. Good luck. Hope you get it bought. Jim

Can't help with the B but I can with the No.5. I bought a JD MT and it came with a No.5 that was complete but didn't run. Aside from repainting it at this point it is restored front to back at a cost of about $550 in parts. I don't think it is worth that by any means but I am currently using it. I would say a used working No.5 could bring from $150-$250. There are some on ebay day dreaming they are worth $350-500 that are not restored. I don't know if they are worth even that much once restored!

Who ever owns it should set an asking price. If it belonged to my grandfather I would be willing to go $1500 for the tractor only. I understand where the rest of the guys are coming from on a $1000 price but its grandpa's tractor and there are not many of them around that belonged to him. That said don't go overboard because it was once his.

Appears to still be decent original paint too ?

The most I ever sold a late B for was $ 2,000 it was original and really really tight. It wasn't used much and ran GREAT !

Now somewhere in it's life that tractor had a power-trol hyd. unit from an earlier model put on it.( note the knurled lock nuts to hold the couplers in ) Perhaps maybe ? it only came with the foot pedal power-lift and they swapped it out from an older parts tractor.

In today's market I'd think an offer of $ 1,000 would not be out of line for the tractor and if you have to add some in for the implements ,but not alot.

You will be negotiating with yourself on this matter and will make for hard feelings in family. This is both a business and emotional matter. I suppose since its your Grandad's they could just give it to you. YOu can find out if any other family members are interested, if so discuss an arrangement to purchase by making the best bid. If it is an auction you can just make the best bid. If you have a family member that's gold digging then anything you offered wouldn't be enough. Probably $1000 would be a start as there is no telling what you'll have so spend if you want to fix it up and one restored is probably work $2000-2500 as these were very common. Never had any luck trying to buy from family, either I over paid or there was hidden cost. I would first find out what they are wanting before I do any more.
