ok , i have a neighbor with a nice 4320. he wants to put a sound-gaurd cab on it. i know it can be done, seen several 20 series done, 5020 etc. has anyone done it and can you give advice or wher to find the info to do it. i remember seein several stories on it in magazines. any help will be greatly appreciated

I have seen it done also on 6030s ,7520,4020,some looked factory some not. This is only my opinion but his 4320 will bring about the same as a nice 4430 or an average 4440.A friend of mine sells these cabs and they bring $2500 on up.Nice original 4320s with out cabs bring more than with. The only tractors that are redone that sell well are Kinze repowers otherwise it is a labor of love, fun,or being able to accomplish something better than the original. It will definately be quieter and they look nice. Will definately be an eyecatcher.

We did a couple of 4020's years ago. A lot of work. All mounts need to be fabricated. Not as quiet as the 30 series because the dash console is not isolated like the newer tractors. They look good afterwards, but I wouldn't do it again...

its not all that hard, didnt magically make it a 30 series, and by the time you buy the cab put in AC you can throw 4 grand at the project pretty quick. Our 43 had a new motor and we had done some tranny work to it so we knew we had a good tractor to start with- at the time this seemed like a better idea then buying a 4430 and taking the chance on getting a rattle snake to throw a bunch of money at. We have since replaced it with a low houred 4630, so it sits quite a bit now.

Nice job on it, that straight pipe probably worked against the quiet cab, I see that it took some engineering for the hood opening,,looks great...

Yeah- it does- we do have the muffler to- which does help (obviously) but still you get alot of noise through the console.
I used a early 30 series cab with no firewall- this one happens to be off a 74' 4630 (or so we were told). We didnt butcher the tractor at all- I can pull the cab off and bolt the orginal parts back on and have a nice 4320- probably in a day.
Mounts were easy to make, and I had to make a 2 piece floor pan for it and weld in the patch on the front where the hood meets the cab, other then that is pretty much a bolt on deal. Amazingly enough even the control rods for the SCV's only took very minimal adjusting.

Our basic deal was the comfort- its ALOT better then the Hiniker 1300 that was on it!!

Yes, a phone booth is as good as an old Hiniker cab,,did you put an oil atinuator on it, those help a lot on the oil pulse noise,,I didn't think they mattered much till I took one off because of an oil leak,,wasn't long till I had it back on....

I have seen pictures of that 4320 before and that is a job well done.It just depends what you want but that one is super sharp.

Tim. Can you tell us more about the attenuator and how the oil pulse noise works? I've been thinking on this for a few years now but not had time to get in to it. thought maybe some of the oil noise came from the priority valve under the right side of the dash. Ken

The attenuator cushions the oil going into the dash on sound guard cab tractors,it plumbs into the oil line going up to the steering and brakes, but the line is small since it only feeds the steering and brakes, the 4320 has a large line going up that feeds the entire system, so I would think about a larger 8430/8630 attenuator they are larger and would handle the flow, one could be mounted under the hood or on a frame rail, the larger ones are about 4"X12" or so and as many 86's that have been scrapped there should be plenty of them around. The one I took off a 4430 one day made a big difference,,I put it back on soon... The difference between an attenuator and a accumulator is, the accumulator store hydraulic pressure,,,the attenuator quiets the pressure, New Gens "with-out" cabs don't have attenuators..the Sound Guard attenuators are mounted under the right front corner of the cab, the ones on a big tractor are mounted along the frame.

Those nice 4320s make me wish I had not sold all the ones I have had.Still like the open station look when temperature is above 32 and below 80.The A/C and noise of the Hinsen cab left a lot to be desired but at the time they seemed like a big improvement.I dont know what the decibel rating was but when I get in one now it sounds like the rear end is broken. It is amazing how quiet the late 20 series is W/O cab or rollquard w/canopy.

Thanks for the pic Jim. I guess this needs to be spliced into the high pressure line to the dash functions. I'll start a new topic when I can get in to it. Thanks Tim.

I rebuilt my Hinson cab using new upholstery foam and as much sound deadening material as I could fit in. Put it in the dash area and an extra inch in the floor too. Also the new floor mat is a triple layer sound mat too. This tractor measures only a few decibels higher than my restored 4240. A noticeable difference but miles better than when it came 4 yrs ago. In the plan yet are updated front cab mount fabrication from the new 7x20 series tractors and some better isolation for the roll bar. The hydraulic noise is a big part of the noise left. I like to think these improvements are what Deere would have done if not for the SGB.

I think there is an "in' and "out' to them also, not sure if it's marked so keep that in mind as you go. They locate them out on the frame on the big tractors, I don't think there is room for one under the dash,,maybe bring the line up in the front of the engine and run it back in through the fire wall..I have a 1970 4020 here in the shop so I'm looking at about the same set-up as your 4320 on the plumbing. I believe that hoses help to quiet things down a bit too,,a little here and there add up in the end...

I was thinking of replacing the tube with a hose for ease of installation. I wonder if there is room under the air cleaner?

Tim- I believe your right- they do only work one way, I replaced one on one of our tractors- cant remember which one now- but it seems to me that the fitting were different sizes even. I agree with replacing some of the steel lines with hose under the dash as well- I had a line rupture on our 4620- not exactly sure which one it was anymore- but I do know I had to cut it out of the tractor in 3 pieces due to bends ect. BUT man just that one line made a world of difference.

Ken- where did you get the kit for your hinson and the floor mat- I know theres a few companys making them and was wondering where and how pleased you were with the kit? I'm, going to restore our 72' 4620 sometime in the next couple of years and was planning on doing just like you did with the sound deading mat, or I'm also looking really hard at a product called "lizard skin" which is sprayed on- there are two formulations and one is a ceramic based product that also deflects alot of temperature. Have your filled your roll bar tubes with sand and put rubber cushions between the mount and the axle- thats a big deal- as the hollow tubes of the 4320 act almost like a tuning fork- that you get to sit between!!
Also Ken- on a 4320- I highly doubt theres room by the air cleaner- its pretty tight in there the way it is already.

I will look at the lines under the dash again when I paint the dash and steering column.
I didn't like any of the kits I saw on the net. I went to a shop in town that builds pneumatic air systems for transportation and sorting of material. They have all the pipes and engineered cyclones and also the sound deadening material to make the stuff quiet. The foam was similar to Deeres foam and cheaper, especially if you get "cut off" pieces, but I think next time I will buy the bulk sheet from Deere as I think the vinyl is stuck to the foam better.

The floor mat came from the same mfr and is a good product. I'll have to look up the name and post it. I called and talked to an engineer and got some tips on the products and how to use them. I also got some triple layer sound foam from the same mfr and glued it under the cab and lined all the cowl panels . I even put a layer of the stuff under the back two feet of the hood.

I looked at a Deere kit I put in our 4240 and noted how it was cut at the corners and bends. It is not a simpe cut but mitre cuts on an angle I used a light cordless circular saw with the blade in backwards to make very nice cuts that folded well where needed.
I also discussed with the engineer the rubber under the roll bar mounts and if I could figure out the weight and sqr inces available he could easily spec some material to quiet the roll bar. I just haven't hat the time to get back to it yet.

Does any body have an original parts book for the 4320? I have a paper updated copy and it shows a block between the roll bar base and the clamp bar under the axle but no spect for this part. This part does not show up in the current on line parts book at all. I wonder what the length of it is an what material. This would limit the clamping action of the roll bar on the axle and may affect the noise. The open station tractors never has this part.
Also I wonder hoe cushy the rubber strips inside the clamp parts were as new?

Yes the air cleaner area is full. I still hope to put some a/c in there soon.

Found some pics.
