I jumped to the S post on the solenoid. Key in ON position, got lots of spark she will not crank still just a click same as turning the key. Noted that the wires from "I" terminal to coil were quite warm when I finished. What is the next thing I should do? |

Chris. When you jump directly from your pickup battery to the starter you are bypassing the solinoid. Direct power your the starter. Like I said before. It should start so be VERY CAREFUL. When it does. Replace the starter solinoid.

You can jump it going directly to the starter. BUT I AM WARNING YOU. Make SURE it is in Nuetral and Brakes are SET. Hook cables up to your pickup. Then clamp the GROUND on the frame of the tractor as to get a good ground. Then, this is where you HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFULL. Key ON. With the POSITIVE cable touch the positive post coming from the starter solinoid to the STARTER. It will start. Because you are by-passing the starter solinoid. BE CAREFULL !!!!!!!!!. IF IT starts doing this. The starter solinoid is BAD.

I am not sure I follow this logic. How is this different then starting it with the tractor battery? It is just a different battery. Secondly if the starter motor is good but the solenoid is bad, how would the starter motor engage the flywheel. I thought the job of the solenoid was to mesh the flywheel and the starter motor together? What am I missing?

Chris: Let me do a 101. The click you hear probably is the solenoid. Probably the contactors that the end of the plugger activate are arced to the point that you're not getting a power transfer of current directly from the battery. It sounds to me like you might want to get someone little more familar with the unit to check out as previous post gave a pretty good explanation and you may burn or blow up something if not careful to say the least get injured. Be safe.
