John Deere A top speed question

I have a 45 JD A ser#558344. It has the six speed transmission in it. In the manual with 11-38 tires, the top speed is 12 3/4 mph. Mine has 12.4-38 tires and when you put it in sixth gear it will go 22-23 mph. About 9-10 mph in 4th. Most all the work is done in 1st or 2nd gear. Is it an option or something to have a high speed rear end in it? If so, any ideas on how the gear it down a bit. Thanks for he help.

Are you sure on the speed? i have never seen an A that will go that fast. Unless someone modified it in some way at one point in time. There was no optional high speed rearends for the A series.

It would sure turn heads on a tractor ride.I have heard of people changing them as they were not made for speed.Usually they run under 15MPH.

I don't know what A's you guys have been driving around but my 45 went 16-18 without mashing on the governor and my cousin and a couple other people that I go with on tractor rides had A's that went just as fast.

I'm just going by what my hand held GPS told me. I could have probably gone 18 downhill as my govenor never could really keep up with the tractor.

I sure wished my unstyled 37 A would run that kind of speed.Mine will do 6 mph on the gps will top out at 8 mph while pushing on the govener .I got 14.9-38 rears on it. I"m looking for a overdrive. I can"t do any tractor rides.

I have one very late long hood and a '44 steel tag & like you said... the mid series are faster than the late. These are my fastest tractors. Have never timed 'em but they out run the B's, late A's, the 70D & the WC with nooooo trouble! Of the fleet here, only the 4020D out runs 'em. I've had 'em on more than one tractor tour. Tough to keep the governor from getting confused & keep them from surging so I use the old WC flat top for tours.

Well, I can say that anything over 12 MPH on an early Row-Crop tractor is an accident ready to pick a Place to Happen...
Grandad had a Farmall "H" that wust have been born half Airplane...Never did even get close to 1/2 throttle in 5th with that one...it would FLY, I think..!
My 720 D gets mighty "Touchy" at anything over 12 MPH..even though it will go faster..I am NOT going there...!!
We don't want OR Need reading about any accidents with farm Equipment involved..
BE Careful..."THIMK"..

Ron..

That is way I would actually like the gear down a bit. I'm not looking to run it on the Bonneville salt flats. I honestly think it would go just about 25 mph pushing it hard. I never ran it full open. Your right it does get to be a handfull at that speed, that's way I think I'll keep it out of 6th gear. I would just like a bit more gearing for pulling. I had to laugh when I went to rake hay with with it, and my uncle said he would run maybe 4th gear or so( he has a B, and has never seen mine run). It was 2nd at 3/4 throttle or 3rd @ 1/4 throttle if the ground was smooth enough. Thanks for the input guys. Enjoy the day.

2-23 kilometers per hour is approx 14mph. Any chance the gps units were switched?Every now and again the cops pull over somebody doing 90mph in a 90 kph zone when the dash is accidentally switched to imperial.
