Step on the starter on my "47 John Deere--A and nothing happens? The battery is charged. What would be some ideas on getting to the problem? It worked last fall.

What typically happens in such cases is that the copper contacts inside the foot switch have worn away to such a point that they no longer make contact any more. You can disassemble it and maybe flip a few things around such as the side of the bolt on which the contact used to fit to or the contact piece itself. If this has been done too many times before though you are pretty much left with the purchase of a new foot switch.

Before you tear into it you should always renew your ground contacts and make sure you are fixing the right thing first. Nice tight ground bolt with wire brushed metal all around and then if still no joy then mess with the foot switch.

See if you have voltage to the switch on the starter, if you do then you may have to remove the starter to remove the switch to check it. Something may have gotten in there or the contacts are worn.

Also check for corrosion of the wires on the battery terminals, do not forget to check the ground to the frame as well.

Clean connections? Power to the lights? Or nothing at all?
