I just bought a 1949 JD model M . The PO installed a throwout bearing a year before I bought it. The clutch would not engage and made a noise. I got it in my shop and split it. I found the reason it would not engage is the TOB collar was frozen on the main drive pinion tube and when you pushed in the clutch pedal the TOB Collar yoke would just past the Collar ,. Anyway I got my puller and pulled off the TOB and then attached the puller to the TOB collar, after some time it pulled out the tube with the Collar frozen to it, I noticed a lot of galling on the MDP and also on the inside of the tube, I noticed the Pilot Bushing was wore completely out, My theory is this. The pilot bushing was worn so bad the the MDP was wobbling inside the tube and it got super hot and welded it to he collar. On the end of the tube you can see where a got so hot it took a piece out of the tube. My question is my theory correct or am is this just wishful thinking ? Sorry for the long post.

That looks ugly! Sounds like a theory but that's one heck of a
meltdown. Something else may have come in to play on that
one. Just seems like a lot of carnage. Did he ever go back
and adjust the clutch after the new TOB?

I don't know, I don't think so . But I don't think clutch adjustment caused it because the MDP is galled also and that is what caused the Sleeve to heat up.

The fingers on the clutch are worn , two are worn significantly . That may have caused the pilot bushing to wear . You think?

Ok I got the pilot bushing out and set it on end of the MDP. It fits very loose as you can see. Maybe my theory is correct ?

I think you are spot on. Lots of damage in there to repair.
How are the springs on the clutch plate?
