adding a turbo to a 4240

i got a 81 4240 with the 466 i am considering adding a turbo to what will i need to do it? Is there a kit i would like to keep the same hole in the hood i am going to buy a new turbo but i need to know what manifold and piping or whatever else i will need

There's a 4320 turbo & manifold for sale in the classifieds on this site for $200. I don't know if muffler will fit through hole correctly using it or not. Mans phone number is 5635905861

When John Deere put turbos on engines they did alot more then just bolt one on. Cooling upgrades and connecting rod upgrades a a few I am sure of.
Many have been added and worked out, but your longeviety of your engine may suffer ?

You caught me in a mistake again,DARN IT. On 404 cid & 466cid engine not many parts interchange. What was I thinking????

To add to what you stated oil sprayed on the underside of the pistons.

Yes a lot of things will inter-change on them,,the 4320 turbo sets closer to the front of the engine than a 4430/4440 does, I do use the 4320 exhaust elbow to work with a 4430 manifold on a 4020 turbo set up I will be posting some pics of a nice set up I'm working on right now,,nice and clean....

Yes they set up a system to spray oil on the under side of the pistons and used a larger wrist pin and a bit different compression ratio. But if you use some sense a 4020 with a turbo and running in the 125hp area will live a long life. We have one here that has been working steady with a set up on it for about the last 25 years, spent all winter on a 750 feed grinder getting a strong work out..as always though "Faster Horses need Better Wagons"

In about 2005, our 4240 needed an overhaul, and we had a kid that worked for us that was going into the John Deere Tech program in MAdison, WI.

The 4240 was his guinea pig. Anyway, the head had several cracks, and so we replaced it with a 4440 head and turbo system. I don't recall if the rods and pistons had been upgraded to 4440 specs... I could check.

Using the 4440 head lowered compression a little, rather than just bolting on the turbo t othe natural head.

We left on the rotary pump, and didn't touch it from factory specs. This resulted in a 130 hp tractor... that seems to get a fair amount more work out of the same amount of fuel.

The muffler hole had to be cut out a little bit, maybe a 1/4 inch to the left to clear the muffler.

The whole thing turned out rather nicely, and while it's still not a 4440, its a lot more tractor than the original.

Turbos work great as to adding power and efficiency. Keep all of your old parts and if you decide to upgrade to a bigger tractor best to remove anything not stock as it hurts the resale even though it has more power.
