I have a 4955 and the front wheel drive will not disengage. The dealer told me I need a new tach. A tach is $1200. Could anyone give me direction as to should I buy a new tach($1200) or look for another problem?

does the toggel switch still opperate properly? it should turn the power off soleniod that engages the clutch

I think that you need power down to the selinoid to shut the front off if you have a broken wire it will be in 4 wheel drive.

You need to have power down to the solenoid to turn it off, it also has a circuit that goes through the brake peddles (a stupid idea in my book) if the peddles hang a bit it can cause the front end to stay 'on'..picking the peddles up with your toe can some times make it shut off, adjusting linkage will correct this, and one of the micro switches in that area could be bad. As for a tach,if you need one, Ag Express (765-533-4809) will re-build yours for around $200, but the tach will not cause the front end to stay on..

The mfwd is spring applied and presure disengaged, so it works backwards to the way you would think. It takes 12 volts to disengage, if the wires are torn off it is engaged, common problem. Or if the seals are blown it's engaged

If it's anything related to my 6400, crawl under the tractor and look for a solenoid wire on the side or bottom of the transmission cases, and make sure it's not broken or loose on the contacts. My 6400 wasn't showing being engaged in all four, but was. The plug to the solenoid was knocked off by a cornstalk or something. Snapped it back on, and no more problems--

Just had a 4650 in with the same problem...solenoid was cracked and was no longer working. Take a test light and make sure you are getting current down to the solenoid to begin with...As someone else stated, the mfwd is hydraulically disengaged...not the other way around. There was an updated solenoid (changeover) for the 50 series...
