I am looking at a 1968 JD 2020 with a 37 loader. Is this tractor capable of picking up a large round bale of hay?

It should pick a rd bale up alright. 37 loader is one of JD's lighter constructed loaders.37 loaders have no down pressure on lift cylinders only gravity.

we got a 2020 gas with a 48 loader on it. Also has the reverser as well. Great loader tractor and handles bales just fine. Rear tires are fluid filled, too. If moving bales regularly, rear fluid or weights would be wise. Also, check ply rating on front tires. Might get by on 6 ply, but 8 ply would be better.

One other thing to check for is if the 37 has a bucket cylinder. Some only have a rope trip latch.

Should be. We have a gas 2020 with a 520 loader on it. It will pick up 5x6 round bales on level ground. Can't back up a big hill with a roll on the front, but it does good for loading and unloading.

There is what the tractor & loader can lift. Then there is what the tractor and loader can handle. There is a picture on this site of somebody with an overload JD 50 . Not enough weight on the rear wheels and she skidded down hill then rolled.
