18.4x38's on 4020

Im looking to swap the 18.4x34's on one of the 4020s to 18.4x38's and I am wondering how much clearance will there be between the tires and the factory fenders? Or should I find some of the taller fender brackets? are those taller brackets hard to find?
thanks

Zach

I put 18.4-38's on my older 4020 that had 34's on it. At first I had Firestone Deep Treads on it which are one of the largest tires for their size that have been made. I placed the fenders in their tallest position and there was plenty of clearance. I believe I have the fenders set one notch to the outside of the innermost notch on the axles. I did this so I could have enough room to get on and off the tractor..:) The tractor has factory long axles so it won't go in to a 60" tread but will go down to around 64" which still works ok for a 30" row, although the outside clearance demands some closer driving in corn rows. You should get along fine. Mike

Ok thats good I havent got the tires or anything yet and still need the centers and rims too, but i thought i would ask and see if the fenders would be a problem or not

I have had several 4020s that had 18.4x38 tires on them. The fenders arent a problem but there are two different fenderstands available and one is taller. Many tire combinations were available in 69/72 and some were equipted with the larger fenders the same as 4320.If do not have the tires I recommend looking for a set of 16.9 x38 I personally think they match the tractor size better. The fender clearance will be around 4 inches

I would like to do the same with my 4320 with Hinson cab.
Are the 38" centers hard to come by? What is the going rate for a set?
Also are ther any used wedges around? A friend busted one up moving a stuck wheel and the local yards had none. Ma Deere wants a lot for these he found.

Sorry side counsel I dont have access to the parts
# you need.I usually ask for TX Jims help or go to
local JD dealer where I can access some of their
info.It sounds as though you have the heavy cast
wheels off 4520,4620,5020 etc. These are different
and you need what came on late 4020/4320 /4430/
all having 3/3/8.The 4440 had 3/5/8 and most had
the regular cast centers although the heavy cast
was an option. You can use the earlier centers even
from tractors with 15.5x38 but more than likely
the rim will be to narrow. The wedges can be
changed from different castings as long as they
are matched. They can bring $500 or more as several
people like 38 tires.Your 34s arent a very hot
item and will bring what they weigh.

(quoted from post at 19:40:49 02/20/12) Larry, what would be the factory correct casting number for 38 inch castings on a 4020?
thanks Zach

Zach
I copied & pasted this from my reply to a similar question by Kirk down the page.
Correct 38 cast center for 4020 is R48954 WHEEL 1 ((A) (C) AND 4000 SERIES) (15.5-38 OR 18.4-38 TIRE AND RIM) (SUB FOR R33430)

(quoted from post at 06:12:01 02/21/12) You can use the earlier centers even from tractors with 15.5x38 but more than likely the rim will be to narrow.

I researched the possibility of using F1500R cast wheels and I think no wedges will work for a 4020 because of the larger axle than a 4010.

Yes, I bought a 3010 with the f1500r and was all set to do the swap with the 4320 but they have a unique smaller size wedge set and will not interchange.
You must use the 38s that came out next, like on a 3020.
I think the 1500 disk looks a little lighter than the ones that will fit!!!

Tx Jim is right .They wont work off 3010 I was
thinking early 4020 w/15.5x38 and they might not be
right.Should have stopped at The fact that I did
not know.As usual my advice is worth what it costs
maybe less sometimes.
