I bought a 4020 at an auction. got it cheap but its pretty beat up. The turbo was falling apart so we took the insides out and capped the opening. Will it harm the engine to run with the straight pipe rather than a muffler?

Those didn"t even come with turbos factory, so a long as you run your intake through the air filter your fine. That being said you can find someone who is parting out a 7700 combine and get the turbo off it and it really makes those tractors come to life.

Will the fuel efficiency improve with a turbo? I use this tractor mainly for lighter work, so I really don't need extra horsepower. If the fuel stretches further it would be worth putting the turbo back in operation.

Turbos always improve fuel but the gains you would get on lighter work would be marginal. Thats my two cents. If you use it for light work where your tractor is not getting above 2000 rpms the turbo is not even really kickin in.

Ever look at the Nebraska tractor tests? Diesel fuel efficiency drops dramatically at light loads.
The lightly loaded engine is pumping un-used air through the combustion chamber. This extra air isn't participating in the combustion process.
This un-used air just carries combustion heat up the stack. Instead of the heat being available to make combustion chamber pressure.

My advice would be to get correct manifold even though it probably wont hurt it to run it that way.If it not very nice it probably doesnt need the extra stress another 30H.P.makes with the turbo.Turbos are fine and do improve efficiency, but also can be costly if not used right.
