B axle seals

Okay this CAN"T be this difficult! Just trying to change the rear axle felt seals on my 39 B. There is the stamped dust cover held on by four screws. Then a solid steel spacer which is NOT moving. Inboard of that apparently is another stamped retainer. What the heck holds this spacer in place? The parts manual shows the second felt washer/seal held in place by this retainer. I assume the retainer comes out last??
HELP!! PLEASE

If you are trying to stop a leak you will have to go further than the felt seals they are "dust seals". Search for my post on 6-6-11 and you will see what is involved with my 39B, the oil seals are inside the axle near the bull gears.

To get to the axle seals, you have to pull the axles out and the bull gears out of the rear end. It IS that difficult.

My experience is that the flet is just so gummed up with old geral oil and dirt that the spacer is stuck in place. I generally change the inboard seals at the same time, since, as folks have said, is the control point for the oil leak. I remove the outboard tin shield, then break one bull gear loose using a wedge, then a spacer, which pushes the axle out and the felt mounting hardware with it.

i did mine on my AO, after some bummed nuckles, a few good words, and wandering why i didn't just let that leak just be, i got it done, i was going to do them on my b also, but i'm just going to let it leak.(it isn't leaking that bad to go cuss that much again)
