JD 5300 jumpy steering.

Trying to fix my neighbors 1996 John Deere 5300 that was parked for about 3 or 4 years. Got it running last night, and everything works great except the steering is very jerky. He bought it just before it was parked and it had the problem at that time too. Feels like air in the system possibly?

Checked the fluid in the rear reservoir and its a bit over the full mark. This wouldn"t cause rough steering, would it? I can also hear some noise in what I assume is the pump in the engine area. I"m an auto mechanic, but not familiar with tractors.

What should I look for with this steering issue?

There is also a very large hydraulic unit running off the front of the engine with its own resevoir, but I assume this has nothing to do with the steering.

i could be wrong but i thinking that the early 5000 series had a separate tank
for the power steering in front of the radiator

How long since hyd filter(part # RE45864) was changed???

The power steering gets it's oil from one section of the hyd pump bolted to the side of the engine. The only thing related to hyd's up by radiator I can find is an oil cooler. I would try and check steering hyd psi with a gauge.

Changing that filter sounds like a good idea. Never been changed since he bought it.

Where is this filter located? I see the engine oil filter, and the fuel filter but not the hydraulic filter.

Ok, found the filter, bought a new one and changed it. Problem is still there.

Now I tested out the hydraulics on the three point hitch, and its jumpy too. Found what I think is a brand new valve under the seat, part number on the receipt is: RE197078, and a seal kit p/n: RE216107. The guy paid over 800 bucks for this stuff.

So, I suspect I need to change this valve and figure out where this seal kit goes. Does this sound like the problem?

Thanks for your help so far guys, this forum is great.

If 3pt and steering are both jerky after changing hyd filter I'd suspect weak pressure control valve or weak hyd. pumps. There's a SN break on the pumps and here's the one for later SN.

Have you checked the sump screen yet? You might also want to check for an obstruction in the sump lines. A few yrs back a customers 5500 that he bought new had similar problems. After a ton of diagnostic time we discovered a large plastic plug mostly blocking off the sump line. It had to be there sence new as it was between the sump sceen and pumps. I know for a fact that nobody had ever been in those lines. Fact is, weird things happen!
