Trying to fix my neighbors 1996 John Deere 5300 that was parked for about 3 or 4 years. Got it running last night, and everything works great except the steering is very jerky. He bought it just before it was parked and it had the problem at that time too. Feels like air in the system possibly?
Checked the fluid in the rear reservoir and its a bit over the full mark. This wouldn"t cause rough steering, would it? I can also hear some noise in what I assume is the pump in the engine area. I"m an auto mechanic, but not familiar with tractors.
What should I look for with this steering issue?
There is also a very large hydraulic unit running off the front of the engine with its own resevoir, but I assume this has nothing to do with the steering.
