950 John Deere with a cracked block

JOHN ALMOND

New User
I am looking for a replacement engine. Any sort of thoughts what could replace it??? I hear that some bob cat engines would work. Which ones??? Would it run well?
I appreaciate any and all help. I move round bails to feed the animals with my tractor and need it soon. I also do all the mowing with it.

Assuming it's the 950 compact tractor and not the Timberjack.

You have to figure what the tractor is worth as is?
Worth after restoring to operational condition a 23-33 yr old tractor with how many hours and how much wear?
All and total costs to return to operational condition.
Price of new replacement with no wear, no previous abuse and full warranty?
One has to run the numbers and figure what in your personal situation is cheapest in short and long term.
If it's freeze damage, what else is busted?
Repair or sell/trade and purchase? There is no perfect solution, all are compromises.

It is owned by one family, not too many hours on it. Routine mowing, moving hay bails out to the animals, some snow plowing. It ran like a million dollars. It leaked oil where I didn"t notice it. I am not a engine mechanic person. My fault. 2 wheel drive, but everything else works awesome.

I suppose your new JD tractor is scheduled for delivery??????? YEA RIGHT!!!!!!!! I suppose you're not recommending for someone to buy a new JD when you won't or can't.

txjim, good to see you back. I was getting worried when you had not promptly responded.

My tractor still runs so replacement is optional.
When the time comes when having to choose between spending more than what it's worth on repairs. It's gone and new/nearly new will be purchased.
Parts and labour repairing the 950 is going to cost as much as trading the busted 950 for a new 2WD 3005.
We are not comparing here Waterloo 50/55/60 series with those new and overly complex commmon rail Tier III & Tier IV tractors. I agree keep the 50/55/60 series Waterloo's running.
If purchasing a small 2000,3000,4000 or 5000 series tractor. Do it quick before they are converted from mechanical injection to common rail emissions before the end of 2013.
Manufactures are going to Tier IV now rather than rushing at the end of 2013.

I been on here every day just hadn't seen where you were trying to persuade posters into doing something that you won't/can't do as in buy one of the new tractors. I'll remind you again that this is an antique tractor forum.

I just want to have my tractor back. It did every job I ever asked it to. I don"t need a new one just need the 950 john deer engine or what ever would replace that and work well. I appreaciate any and all help. Thanks very much. I have a talented friend who can do the work for me so we are good in that department.

What is failed and broken? The block and/or sleeves? Was it freeze damage or run out of oil and put a rod through the block?
How much are you planning to pay for repairs?

Don't know exactly which engine series Yanmar used in those 950's but here is the current Yanmar of similar displacement. And another Yanmar of similar power.
Can't hurt to checkout the JD short block.Sometimes some JD parts are surprisingly reasonable in price.
