4020 Powershift Reverse

I might go look at a pre-'69 4020 gas powershift and the owner claims the reverse doesn't always work, and that you need to work the handle around to get it to go in reverse. Sounds like a linkage to me but I've never had one apart, only driven our 4020 D-powershift. What is that likely to be?

Rest of the tractor is in good shape with good tires and asking $5000 with the reverse issue.

Thanks

I"m on my 5th PS, since 1973. One with over 11,000 hours- no problems, other than the 3020- still have it, had the PS rebuilt in 1980. Occasionally, need to move the lever sideways in the slot, for it to engage. Have replaced some linkage under the dash that was worn. Often, spray lube is all it needs. In 1980, hour meter showed over 5000, but tech said someone was in it before, and figured it was a plantation tractor from the South, where they run non-stop...maybe had 15,000 hours on it. Considering the jockey I bought it from, very likely.

1st thing Id check is the filters on the transmission and the screen this can cause not to work. A must change filters every year. Also use a magnet and check for metal shavings.

Probably linkage. Seems like the little dog that shifts it forward to reverse gets worn and doesnt travel far enough. Had the same thing in the 4630 as well. No big deal. Good luck and get us some pics!

Agree with Bill. Its a very common wear point. You can either braze it bit up or replace the two parts.

Well he decided to part it out instead...
Said a guy showed up with cash that needed some parts. Guess I can"t argue
