engine kit for a 4030 worth it?

ok another question just deciding what my options are for my tractor. Thinking about trading up to a 4240 or a 4440 but for now considering pulling the head and putting sleeves and pistons in it bearings and so forth is it really worth it the tractor is paid for but its not really worth much paid 12000 for tractor 148 loader and a 7 ft 3 point deere brush hog so i am not in it deep at all what should i do???

I guess it all depends..do you intend on running the tractor for a long time? What condition is the rest of the tractor in? At least you already know what you have, if you go buying another tractor you could wind up buying someone elses' problem. Not sure if this helps you or not, just thought it might be something to consider...

the rest of the tractor is in good shape tires and loader i would keep the loader to put on one of the 3020s or the 4010 only thing the tractor really needs that i know of is the rubbers under the cab mounts just havent done them yet only thing i dont like about the tractor is that when i have a fertilizer buggy full 3 tons of fertilizer and pull a small hill it dont have any power and you have to down shift from D4 to almost D1 our 3010 and the 3020s you can leave in 8th and they just blow black smoke and go just has not much power it seems and i put in new injectors and injector pump last spring and had turned up 10% still not happy

thinking hard about rebuild kit and having head checked but dont know about the turbo would it really be worth it? and would i gain enough to make it worth it?

As for the power issue I'd put it on a dyno and see what you really have. Check for excess blow by too.

its got blow by thats the other reason for thinking of rebuild i am sure its over due its the first tractor i ever bought and would like to keep it but also dont want to spend a ton of money on a rebuild and still have starting a power issues but i know this tractor as its been in the family many years

I feel the 329 is a good breathing engine. They seem to respond very well to a little extra fuel even without a turbo.

As long as it's still running and making decent power without excessive wear showing in an oil analysis. Just keep adding oil and run it till she drops. Then decide.

(quoted from post at 20:21:49 03/07/11) only thing i dont like about the tractor is that when i have a fertilizer buggy full 3 tons of fertilizer and pull a small hill it dont have any power and you have to down shift from D4 to almost D1 our 3010 and the 3020s you can leave in 8th and they just blow black smoke and go just has not much power it seems and i put in new injectors and injector pump last spring and had turned up 10% still not happy

IIRC you also stated you had problems pulling your JD rd baler. According to Deere.com min hp requirement for a 568 is 75 hp. If your 4030 was up to factory spec's plus the 10% it should handle a 5 ft JD rd baler fine. It also should pull the fert buggy much easier than a 3010/3020.

I pesonally think the money you spend to overhaul would go a long ways on a larger tractor.Unless you do it yourself or have reasonable connections, you will have to use it a long time as it always costs more than you expect. The 404 engines or 466 are a huge step up from a 329.Just my 2 cents

Agree with a sleeve/piston kit, tweak the pump a bit AFTER you see ho the rebuild works out. 329 in my 3130 ran out at 105hp with no troubles.

The Dubuque 300 series have the cross head design that the Waterloo's lack. Makes for more efficient ports. Maybe why Deere uses the 414TI right up into the large frame 7000 series?

Aren't the 329 motors literally a dime a dozen? They are in 4400 and some 6600 combines I believe. I know a while back a friend bought a good one with no core from the local junkyard for $800

If it was me, I would throw a good one out of a combine in it. Around here if you want to screw with dragging one home, the engine would be free after you scrap the rest......

I kind of have to agree. If its not using oil bad enough to where u cant use it and you have another tractor or its a chore tractor and not depended on 8 hours every day run it. You can find a 414 and install it in, the 329 and 414 are both dubuque engines. I still think turboing would give it a little more ommf, without going crazy. Really the extra power output is dependant on the amount of fuel its given, thats how you control the power. If you would get another 15-20 horsepower out of it, that should be a seat of the pants difference for a farm tractor and hold its torque a little longer.

thats the thing it dont burn any oil when just feeding and when using everyday to bale in the summer it only burnt 2 qts every 50 hours so it really dont use oil

We did ours last Feb. All new pistons, sleeves, bearings, injectors and it was worth it! You would think you just bought a new tractor. Ours was the same, seemed to be getting lazy but after overhaul, not now. Ended up being a cheap tractor nowadays. Don't forget the 329's have the biggest torque curve. Even over the 40 series.
