50 power steering oil foaming

What would cause the ps fluid to foam ? Would Lucas ps fluid additive cause this? It does have the JD powering steering oil in it. Totally rebuilt unit by a professional, and new oil.

How bad is it foaming ? Is the oil blowing out ? I have pulled the oil stick on some right after they ran and there was alot of bubbles on it,but no know problems with the unit. I can't remember for sure if I ever ran one with the dipstick out or not ?

Leaking seals on the power steering pump. It's a suction leak. Got to fix one on my 620.

It's foaming out the vent on the dip stick, not that bad but bad enough to cause a drip under the tractor. The pump was also rebuilt including a new shaft, no leaks. Could the pump still suck air ?

Is it foaming out the top of the fill tube?

I had the same thing happen on my 60. Here is what I did. First I rebuilt the pump, and still had foaming problems. Then I took the pump apart and found all three pieces, untrue, so I trued them up with 400 grit sand paper laid on a piece of glass. You see there are no gaskets in between the pump plates or ends, I built my own out of magazine paper. It fixed it and to this day I do not have any problems.

There's not much to rebuild in the pump other than a new pair of seals fore and aft. I like to lap the body halves on a plate with Clover 0000 lapping compound to get them flat, a new shaft if there are bad grooves or the fan drive splines are worn. New seals that are installed incorrectly (should be back to back) will still allow them to suck air. Good chance that the new seals which are half the thickness of the original chevron seals, and must face back to back were installed in one direction only. In which case, fluid will be sealed from exiting, but air will not be sealed against entry.

Was the big cover next to the dipstick removed when the rebuild of whatever was done? I had a 620 foaming problem and the big cover O-ring was not sealing. I replaced the cover (stamped steel) and O-ring and the problem was fixed.

Hondabond works good for sealing the pump halves. Others have said Indian shellac is good.

Lemme see, was "snake oil:" needed to make the PS system work when new???

I'm guessing NOT, so WHY did you dump some in there now?

That being said, I'd suspect the pump shaft seals.

Might check the suction pipe for hole up top by the clamp. Also make sure the aluminum gasket washers are there. Dont put snake oil in these systems.
