I bought this tractor last fall at an estate auction. It was listed as a 4020 gas console, so I went and checked it out and as soon as I walked up to it I realized it was a 4000!! Couldn't believe what I just found! There wasn't much interest from other bidders because it was not a diesel, I guess it pays to know a little about John Deere's!

That is the one from the estate sale in Chesterton, isn't it? I was there and saw it. I also noticed it was a 4000 not a 4020. You got a heck of a deal on it too! I tried to get the wife to let me bid, but with a baby on the way I had to agree with her that our money was best spent elsewhere. Nice find!!!

Looks like a nice original. There were only 290 made with syngro.Must have added extra lights on fenders.Hope it has Zenith carb as they run much better.Gases have their place especially when we have chill factors of -30 below as we did last week

I agree with Larry on the lights or someone put 3020/4020 fenders on it.

If it happened to be a powershift you would have really hit the jackpot as there were only 9 made.I bought 4 4000s from a gentleman that had 17 or more and two power shift gases. The gases are a good buy in the collector word not to good in user world

I think VERY highly of our GAS 4020. I bought it for a user I doubt it has much collector value maybe many more years from now ?

It all depends on what you want to use it for. Ours does snow removal and many odd jobs and loader work. I just couldn't see having a diesel for all the short trips I make. Start it up load something and back in the shed it goes. Sometimes as little as 15 mins.
Had it since around 1993 and maybe put around 600 hrs. on it in all this time.

Ya, it is the one from Chesterton. I was actually looking to find a 4020 gas console to match my dads diesel console, but couldn't believe it was a 4000! I'm glad to were no collectors or big auctioneers there to buy it, otherwise I might not have been able to buy it, eventhough I was pretty determined to bring it home. Also, it gets to stay in the area!

Oh man, if it could have been a powershift I would have been in heaven!! Altough I think that would have pushed it way out of my price range. Where is the guy that has 2 powershifts? I heard there is a guy somewhere around North Judson,IN that has a couple plus many other JD's. Are your 4000's all gasers?

Glad to know it gets to stay in the area! I went to look at it, thinking it was a 4020 as advertised. Then we started looking it over and I realized it was a 4000. I really wasn't sure how many gas/synchro/console 4000's were made but I knew it had to be not too many.
