John Deere 4010 12 volt conversion question.

I"m in the process of converting my John Deere 4010 diesel tractor from a 24 volt to a 12 volt system. I replaced my old starter and generator with a new 12 volt starter and alternator. I have everything wired up except for the alternator. I know that one wire from the alternator connects to the positive post on the battery. However, I"m not sure where the other alternator wire connects on the ignition switch. I would appreciate any insight on this subject. Many thanks, Jack St. Hilaire
 
If you are using a common Delco 10SI or 12SI alternator, here's what you need to do... you can use the existing dashboard "idiot light", but remove the resistor that was connected to it for the 24 Volt system.

I like that picture better then the one you used to post Bob ITS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS (provided its an S10 Series of internal regulated alternators one is connecting)

Dear Bob,
Many many thanks and appreciation for the picture and information you posted. This information will be very helpful for me. One question, is the "switched side" of the ignition switch labeled "generator?" If so, is that where I connect the wire leading from the alternator to the dashboard generator "idiot light" to the "generator" position labeled on the ignition switch. Jack, I'm NOT familiar with that exact switch with the "GEN" terminal. As long as that terminal's "hot" when the switch is on and NOT "hot" when the switch is "OFF" it's gonna work just fine.
 
Jack and Bob, Im NOT a New Generation guy but I think the idiot light on those tractors (feed side turns hot when Ign is on) indeed wired to the GEN terminal on the VR, so YES if you wire it to the Alternators No 1 terminal it will serve to excite it.
