i have a 1950 john deere b. it has a canister style oil filter the rod that goes through the center has broken loose at the top, when i try to tighten the oil filter cap it just spins. i removed the access plate in front of the steering collum and tried to take the unit out to weld it up but there isnt enough room, does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this before i have to break the tractor in half???

The problem is someone over tightened the oil filter cap nut and pulled the center rod thru the filter head. In order to repair this you need a filter head and a service manual (I&T or John Deere). This would have never happend if the filter cover gasket had been replaced.
Breaking the tractor in half won't help because all the problems are in the crank case.

I had the same problem when I bought my 50 A. I was able to change the broken cover by removing the crankcase cover. I"m sure you"ll have less room to work in the B. The part you need is B2304R $ 263.25 at Deere. Google the part number or contact used part suppliers from this forum as I did and get it for about $ 40.00 complete. The Deere part is just the cover without anything else. A used one will be fine. Be careful undoing the oil lines, I twisted one off and had to replace that also. The I&T manual shows how to make a simple tool for removing one of the parts in the filter housing. This is definely a two person job when reassembling. If you need any more info email me. Good luck, Fred
