I've got a 1953 John Deere 70 Gas tractor with no battery and want to the battery. I know it originally came with two 6 volt batteries to attain the 12 volts needed but I am going to use just 1 12 volt battery. I have looked completely through the owners manual and through my IT shop manual and can't find any mention of polarity anywhere. So my question, should it have a positive or negitive ground??

Thanks,
Rick

All 2 cylinder JD tractors were positive ground. However, it may have been reversed during its life. If done correctly the wires to the coil should have been switched.

Positive ground = + terminal of coil connected to the distributor

Negative ground = - terminal of coil connected to the distributor
