I never look at Craigís list but I was listing my GN trailer today and did a quick search for John Deere and a John Deere AMT 600 5 wheeler popped up with an asking price of 900 OBO. The small blurry picture looked like it was in great shape. Called the guy and he said everything worked and looked like new except the 23 year old paint job is slightly faded. It was 4:00 PM and he said a guy was supposed to be there at 4 so I should call back at 5. I called back at 5 and he said he sold it 30 minutes ago. Darn it all!

This was the first time I have seen one, I am now obsessed with finding another one to fix up and take to shows and use around the house. I would have gladly given him a grand for it.
Anyone got one and have any reviews on it or want to sell it?

I donít want one to run a business and work hard everyday. Kinda like the old 2 cylinder tractors, modern stuff is a lot more efficient and better to use and there is a reason they quit making them, however we all like them for sentimental and nostalgic reasons. I want an AMT to put around and haul stuff at shows and fit on the trailer next to my tricycle tractor and for something unusual for folks to look at. It is interesting that they are so crappy built, that means a good running one should be extremely rare and therefore valuable. Maybe thatís why I have never seen one before.

Put a plastic milk crate on a quad and you'll have 10 times the machine an AMT is. They were a very crude machine that I doubt had much field testing. For an old machine to be valuable, it has to be something special. AMT's don't fit that category. I worked at golf course that had a couple of the newer model AMT's and couldn't wait to get rid of them. The drive chains for the rear wheels are about 3 miles long and nothing but a PIA to keep on and adjusted properly. JD dropped AMT's for a good reason. They certainly weren't ahead of their time like a MM UDLX or Edsel. Dave

These things were not very good at all. I worked at a JD dealership that tried to sell them to rice farmers and they brought them back to the service dept a lot. Paul

I just saw one for sale along the road north of Wichita, KS on Friday. Didn't stop to see what they were asking for it although it was tempting.

The AMT's weren't one of JD's better machines. Known to be nightmare with lots of drive chain problems. $900 sounds way too high, especially if it's 23 years old. The Gators are much better. Actually almost anything is better thanan AMT. That's why they quit making them. Dave

22mph sounds way too high. Maybe more like 10mph, tops.

Iím up near Huntsville in North Al.

Looks like it would be perfect for carrying the cooler and canopy and grill and chairs and wife and etc at the shows plus it could be parked along side the tractors for folks to look at. Then when I get home I can actually use it as a utility vehicle around the house. The guy said the owners manual said it would go 22 mph which is fast enough for me.

Here is what it looks like for those like me who have never seen one;

I have one here in IL. I bought it off a neighbor and the front fork was completely junk, had been ripped off and welded back on crooked. I cut all of it back off and rebuilt the entire front end. It still needs alot of work but is usable. It still doesnt have brakes, mostly because the brake parts are outrageous! I am not looking to sell it though. There are several around this part of the world though. They are not a high speed machine for sure either
