Bearing removal from JD318 mower deck spindle hubs

Can anyone tell me how to remove the bearings from JD318 mower deck spindle hubs? There is a snap ring on the bottom of the hub. I assume the bottom bearing comes out the bottom after snap ring removal, but what about the top bearing? Does it come out the bottom as well or out of the top of the hub? Any tricks for easy removal? Do you have to have a press to do it?

Thanks! gwece

I had a 47 deck on my 214 and replaced the spindle bearings several times over the years. The snap ring in the bottom is only there to give the lover bearing it's proper location. You press the bearing-spacer-bearing stack in from the top, and then the speindle in from the bottom. If you remove snap ring first, you will have to press both bearings and spacer in between, along the spindle out as one unit. The easiest way is to remove the top nut from the spindle, then press the spindle down and out of the bearing spacer stack, then flip it over and press the bearings out, from the bottom, going out the top. LAst time my dealer as out of a full set of bearings, and I went to Motion Industries. The recommended an upgrade bearing for about $1 a piece more, and they lasted very well.

Just did all three spindles on the Lx188's 48-1/2" deck.
The entire spindle/pulley/casting/bearings/seals/shaft assembly cost about $5 more than just the bearings/seals.

That would not be the case on the mower deck that gwece has if I looked up the correct deck
AM30302 HUB, W/BEARINGS ASSEMBLY ADD 77.00 USD
JD9296 BEARING ADD 7.50 2 required no seals for $15

Thanks guys!

I appreciate the advice & info. I've had the bearings for several days now. Just waiting for a break from hay making to put them in.

Bearings here are $45 each plus the seal from
Mother Deere. I bought three complete spindle
assemblys at $105 each instead.

Yeah, you have to be careful which deck you are talking about. A deck for an LX188 is different, spindle-wise, than say a "47" deck used on the 318's and 200 series, and even more different are the spindles on my "72" deck. Those use bigger, thicker bearings at $21.00 forthe pair, and are well worth the effort to rebuild versus buying the spindle assembly, which costs #341.00. The LX188 spindle assembly complete they show me at $95.00.

I'll sneak an old spindle assembly into work one of these days and use the press to ease those bearings out.
There must be some super duper high end sealed bearing that will sub in and last for years.
Can't complain too much about the original bearings. The machine is 20 yrs old and has 700hrs. The kids beat the living daylights out of it and don't care about rocks and steel posts.
A month ago the youngest offspring smoked both mower belts. By cutting heavy wet grass inwards instead of discharging the grass outwards. He's definitely from his Mother's side of the family.
