1947? John Deere B

I"ve got what I think is a 47 model B. It is a six speed and does not have the high low feature, just the shift column with the 124 on the right and 356 on the left. Problem is, when I go to put it into 3,5 or 6, it is as it the tractor was in neutral. 1,2 and 4 work just fine. Any thoughts as to what my problem could be? The tractor runs just fine with no issues and drives as it should in the gears that work.

Sounds like it's not fully sliding into "high" range. There's a sliding gear that separates high and low range. Either the shifter rails aren't adjusted correctly, or you've got a world of trouble ahead of you.

If this transmission was previously working fine and you have lost 3,5,6, probably like B puller has said, "rails" are moving on you and shifter cannot "push" gears to fully mate together. Worn bearings can sometimes cause this condition also. I would look inside trans. case first to make sure nothing broken. If all O.K. the rails are adjusted on the side of trans. case by an "adjusting" screw that looks like a set screw thats hollow with a locking screw inside that. Nothing impossible to fix just time consuming, removing things. First 39 B I bought had two broken gears and every bearing had to be replaced, no oil at all in transmission! A parts book makes all this easier. PC 330 if you have it.

Okay, here is an update. The shift handle does rotate is this normal? Also, there are times when it will go into the high range set. It seems that when the shifter is in a certain position, it will work. Any thoughts? I marked the handle and shift cradle with a sharpie so I can match the lines. Seems to be okay so far. I"m guessing that the shifter is not supposed to spin and that is what ic causing my problem

Yes, the shifter handle can be rotated without a problem. It is just a straight handle with a spring and a ball on the inside of the trans. cover. It also is possible that "the" ball is severely worn on one side from years of wear and when you rotate to the "fresh" side it pushes those gears a little farther to get into mesh. Again a parts manual and a service manual is needed. I still strongly recommend removing the quadrant cover to inspect the inside to "see" what's really going on. Forgot to mention yesterday that rail adjustment is behind 4th and sixth speed cover behind flywheel. It is some work to get to and you have to open things to check all this "but" if you want it to work correctly, just what it takes.
