Alternator on JD 50

I have read several posts on single wire alternators. Does anyone have any info on how they hook up , what wires go where. Also, what is the best one and how were they mounted. Make your own brackets or is there something available? Cost ? I know it may not be correct, but this will be a working Tractor. Thanks for any help---

Keep the gen.Buy good cables and a good battery and you'll have no trouble.Tractor's been here fifty years with it and now someone wants to change it,go figure.

I used the Delco three wire alternator. Made my own brackets. Look in the archives for details on wiring it up.

And like Larry said, "Keep your old generator". And brackets, etc. The next owner might want to convert it back, if it's a "sitter" instead of a "user".

Unles syou have added a 500watt sterio system to the tractor or aircraft landing lights. The factory Delco 1100955 has plenty of capacity.

Give the guy a break, he did not ask if it was prudent to change, but asked how to do it. I have been using converted tractors since I was little and my dad converted them, they just give less trouble.

save your effort the two bangers don't turn fast enough to excite the one wire alternators to get them to charge...and I doubt that you could find a pulley to work by changing the alternator speed enough.

He is right on the one wire, I would do a three wire again. You know it will charge regardless of the RPM.

rebuilt gen. is about $125 & vol. reg. is $40...one wire alt.$45 & they will excite on any 2cyl....put one on & forget the outdated gen....cut & weld your gen. bracket...pretty simple...

By the time you have to tinker around with wiring you don't understand. That shiny new alternator could be smoked and turned into just an idler pulley. Many of there "converted tractor end up on a battery charger every night after they are improved.
We see a lot of people here spending a lot of time and money. In order to save time and money with an alternator conversion.

The tractor belong's to you so do what you want to with it. I would advise boxing up the old parts just in case though.

If you know anything about wiring you should be fine. Basicly you're just unhooking the old charging circuit and putting in a couple of new wires. Do a search here for a diagram.

Mount the alt where the genny is now. You may or may not be able to use your slide arm, but they are available in most automotive parts houses as well as junk yard's. You may have to do a little bending to the arm.

Cost should be less than $50 if you go with a Delco three wire & twice that for a true one wire.

Thanks for all the response--Pro and Con--
The reason I am asking is the present system is not charging at all. This is a "50" I am looking to buy. I had a alternator on a "60" for 11 yrs with no problems. However I sold the tractor so I have no reference point. Never had a problem so I did not see how it was all connected. I have other J.Ds. with generators/ regulators. The cost to rebuild is higher than an Alternator.
This will be a user Tractor so I wanted something, maybe not correct, but usable. Again, thanks for the feedback---

Yes, the fact of keeping one original is good, but an alternater is much better for a working tractor, I have a "60" that I show and work a little (just for fun)I put a one wire alt on it and it works out great..I don't have that little 'transducer' on it yet and I have to rev it a bit to get it primed...I gonna find out how to get one this week...

WHY don't you just run a wire from the "load" side of the ignition switch to the alternator's #1 terminal with a diode in-line and make it a "3-wire"-style alternator?

You can omit the jumper wire to the #2 terminal, since it's got a "one-wire" regulator.

The diode will cost between $.05 and $2.00.

I'd even send you one for FREE if you send a stamped envelope.

The difference in price between alt and gen is only the price of a 24 of beer or a carton of smokes. Plus you won't have to spend how much time tinker around with a conversion. When your time is worth more elsewhere.
We have had people here install alternators and never get the alt to charge.

go in autozone $45 for rebuilt one wire that will work fine ...anybody that is in love with a Gen. has never used one to work with ..they were junk then & are junk now...I also have a show "D" that has positive gd. & WOW a GEN. on it & it works ...but for a working tractor the alt. is the only way to go
