'41 A Running Rough -- Missing Out

I have a '41 A and it has begun running rough and is progressively getting worse. I have relatively new AC 88 plugs (made sure they were clean) in it and a rebuilt Fairbanks-Morse magneto-less that a year old. I have adjusted the jets to where it runs the best. It doesn't miss as bad when under a load although it still does. No excessive smoke either. I have the tractor under a pole barn so it's not sitting out. It has been humid and today was the worst. I did notice that the carburetor just past the venturi and before entering the intake manifold had moisture on the exterior although it wasn't cold to the touch, just damp.

Here is what I am wondering. I heard of an old-timer who would put his magnetos in an oven at warm (175-200) for about four hours or so and this would drive all of the moisture out of the mag and his equipment would run better. Think this is my trouble?

Thanks in advance for the advice. Zman.

You know I was having the same problem with my 36 Short Frame...couldn't get the damn thing to spark. So I took it apart and rebuilt the magnito and put it back together with half the parts...and I'm not kidding....those extra parts worked great in getting my 54 Cockshutt working. You think I'm kidding...I'll send you the pictures. I got video of it too!!! Bob was shocked....he said he's never seen a magnito with so much umph. So what do you suggest I do with my three point hitch? It keeps sinking down...Bob's gonna' cut his leg off in the damn thing one of these days and I say it's abput time I get it to stay up.....Maybe I should flash him once in awhile..haha.

Zman,

I had a rough running problem with my A.
Tried everything, turned out to be the carb.
I talked to Roberts and I bought the drill bits he has to drill out all the air and fuel holes, and it cranks on the second or third stroke, and runs like a dream!
Ran it the other day for a long time, shut it off and tried to crank it. It started on the first turn. Hope this helps.

Hi Jon, First thing I would do is emery the points and reset them. That sounds like it could be your problem. Also the condenser might be getting weak. If it don't do it till the tractor has run a while than it could be the coil. When growing up we had a couple A's that would get to running rough. Had it happen a couple times part way through the day, it all the sudden would start cutting out, and no power.I learned young to get the screw driver out of the tool box, and adjust the points. Even used the end of the driver to scrape the points. The 51 A we had was the worst about it. Hope this will be of some help to you! Got my DLTX10 back from Robert's today. Hope to get it on this weekend. Good luck to you and your A Jon! Don
