NXB Hercules in L John Deere

I recently acquired a L john Deere with a NXB Hercules engine and John Deere transmission. The serial # tag is of course missing but there is a serial # on the engine block (428826). Any ideas what year this would be or any other ideas on how to get close on what year this tractor is. Also looking for some engine parts if anyone knows of a good source. I am located in southwest Missouri

In 1939 the JD L used the NXB Hercules motor with a top shift transmission, in 1940 the NXB was coupled with the JD side shift transmission. In 1941 they had the JD motor with the JD side shift transmission.

Bob gave you the best info. There is no way to tell based on motor serial number. On the JD motors there is only casting/part numbers, no engine serial numbers. If you get an L parts manual you can look up and see if that is a casting number or not for the block. Ridenour's has many new parts, Rusty Acres Ranch has many used parts. I have bought from both and had very good service and help from both. Be careful of Restoration Supply in MA. His LA parts are usually not "correct" and I have found them to be of poor quality.

Is there a way to tell by the rear wheels? I have a Hercules L That has the silver panted rear rims with the insert, I have noticed that others have what I would call smooth centers all yellow green bolts. What year did they change the rear wheals? like this one in this pic
