How to Pull a Hub?

I'm working on pulling a 12 spline hub off of an Unstyled A, and it is having no part of it. I've bent my 3/4 inch puller so now I'm looking for some pointers.

I agree. That is a perfect spot to use electrolysis cleaning, but that invloves pulling the axle and standing it up in a tank.

You could use SOME heat, but it is risky. If you had the axle free, you could lay it in a fire and let it heat up, then cool down in the ashes. That would probably do the trick as well, but electrolysis would be my first choice.
 
Take your puller off and get a piece of pipe that slides over the the axle. Try to drive the hub towards the tractor. Then use an angle grinder with a cup-type wire brush and get the axle as clean as you can. Install your puller again and when you have pressure on the hub, take a sledge hammer and hit the puller in the center of the outer plate. This will help to "shock" it free. A little heat on the hub won't hurt either.
 
It looks like you are only using two bolts to pull with. We made a puller from a old hub clamp so all three bolts could be used. Using long pieces of 5/8 threaded rod, we had room for a hydraulic jack between the end of the axle and the home made hub puller. I agree with others that you should try to move it inward first.
 
I made some wedges out of hardened steel that will drive in the slots of the hub to help break it loose. The axel needs to be as clean as U can get it, and then keep it wet with pb blaster or penetrating oil. The hubs are cast iron and as such they aren't affected by heat near as much as steel. I just took one off an "H" that was really bad. Took me two weeks. I'm not saying heat won't help. U might try heating it first and let it cool and then try what I've suggested. Good luck. That has got to be the worst pitted axle I have ever seen. If it was mine I would now try using a 3/4 or 1 inch impact on it. Failing that get a sawsall or torch and cut the hub where it comes in to the slot. You should be able to reuse the hub as it is a captive part supported all the way around. Good luck, I got my G hubs loose using a rig like you have but it was not pitted as much.
 
can you put a steel plate up under the axel and pile on as much charcole as possable. (enuf to cover the axel) and light it up and let it go for 2-3 hours? and then see what you can do with the puller. just a thought. Bob
 
Slam that hub back on and clean the axle up a little bit, like said use a wire wheel and maybe some heavy sand paper for what the wire wheel misses
 
I"ve taken one off almost as rusted. You are going to need 3 bolts to do it. 2 just cock it and it binds.
 
KNOCK THE HUB "ON" THE SHAFT ABOUT 1/4 INCH, THEN SAND BLAST WITH FINE SAND OR CLEAN THE AXLE SHAFT COMPLETELY!!! THEN USE YOUR PULLER, WILL COME OFF EASY. OR BRING IT TO ME, AND I WILL HAVE IT OFF IN 10 MINUTES. :)
 
I agree with J D Unstyled farm, knock it back on about an inch and get a wire wheel on a cordless drill and work on those grooves. you'll wear out three or four of those cheap wire wheels so be sure to wear face protection cause you'll be throwing a lot of wire pieces. Go both directions with the wheel in the grooves and use a small sharp chisel where the rust is thick. I worked my hubs in and out till they came all the way off. I softened the rust with PB Blaster also.

I've had good luck using a 3 leg truck brake drum puller and also driving a chisel or wedge into each slot carefully.
 
well in the first place you want to clean the axle shiny clean. then use a hydraulic ram, not the threads, to pull it. you will just destroy it this way - the threads in the hub wont take that. straight pulling without the cranking they will be fine.
 
if you had left the wheel on you can just loop a chain through the two slots, out over the end of the axle, & use a hydraulic jack. works for me every time, after cleaning of course. now you can jack on the plate, with longer bolts. all-thread. but you need to use all three so it dont bind. you should not turn them, using the treads to pull it. they wont take that abuse. they will take MUCH more straight pulling pressure than they will with the twisting of trying to crank bolts in.
 
Alright guys, there are 3 bolts in there, it just isn't absolutely obvious from the angle of the pictures. I will see if I can fit a bottle jach inside the 3 bolts to use.
