Cutting off an Axle

What is the best way to go about cutting off an axle off of an Unstyled A? Its on a parts tractor and its got a 12 spline hub stuck on it that I need. I've bent my 3/4 inch plate puller trying to pull it and snapped 2 breaker bars torquing the bolts. Been spraying with oil for 3 weeks now. Hub hasn't budged. Next step is to press it off, hence getting the axle off.

The tractor is sitting on the ground, or else I would drain the rear end and remove the cover and slide out the whole axle. Since I can't do that, cutting seems to be the last option. If you have any ideas other than a big torch I'm most interested in those.

Thank You

I think I'd try a hand held power hacksaw. Shame to ruin a good axel. Getting that hub off just takes patience.

What has worked for me is build a platform with cinder blocks and/or wood blocks to hold a abrasive chop saw. Cut some, turn the axle and cut some more, trying not to be cutting too large of surface area at once.

Then once you get it cut off, take the saw and make a cut into the axle thru each of the 3 slices in the hub to give it a little room to crush in.

I think all you will do with a power hacksaw is tear up blades. The outside of those axles is HARD!!

I've used a 4.5" angle grinder with 0.040" cutoff wheels. Takes about 5 minutes. Grind, rotate, grind, rotate.

Before you do that, you may want to try to push the hub back ON the tractor. Then get in there with a wire brush and clean up those splines. Also, you need to use all 3 bolts to pull on it, just puts it in a bind otherwise.

Good luck.

The wheels on my B moved a few inches and then got stuck... After looking at it carefully, I noticed that as you moved outward on the axle, the splines were slightly deformed, causing it bind up. After filing them smooth again, it came right off. Any chance you have the same problem?

Are they hard on an A? I've never cut one, but dad cut the end off the left axle on a 47 A with a hacksaw. He bought a new 47 A with a single front wheel, 42 inch rear rubber and extra long axles. I don't know if it was classified as an ANH or not. The left axle stuck out so far he couldn't plow close enough to the fence so he cut it off with a hacksaw. I still have the stub. Wish I had the rest of the tractor. Jim

I don't think my axels are deformed. I'm restoring a '45 "H". It had sit for 10 years. I got the wheels off and the hubs were clear out to the ends of the axels. I got the hubs off but one of them broke. I needed so many parts that I found a parts tractor that had a lot of the parts that I needed so I bought it. It had sit outside for a long time but I finally got all the hubs off of both tractors. Now I'm removing the axels so I can rebuild the brakes

USE A HAND HELD CONCRETE SAW WITH A METAL CUTTING BLADE, CUTS LIKE BUTTER. THOSE AXLES LOOK PRETTY ROUGH, WE HAVE LOTS OF GOOD 12 SPLINE AXLES ON THE SHELF READY TO SHIP, IF NEEDED. ALSO 12 SPLINE HUBS AVAIL.
