Gentlemen,

Seasons Greetings to all.

Wanted to know if someone has a recommendation on a good national brand with complete name, as an equivalent or better for the JD J20C Hygard low viscosity trans/hydraulic oil? I want to replace the transmission fluid in my JD 6x4 gasoline Gator, Yr 97.

Thank you in advance for your help and assistance. Have a safe and healthy New Yr.

Regards,
tstex

For the little bit of oil that thing will need why not just throw some DEERE oil in it and be done with it???

Thanks Bob.

I am not looking solely at cost...if there is something that is better and provides better performance, then I am for it.

Thanks,
tstex

As demonstrated by an Amsoil and Shaffer salesman, much to their dismay, the Deere Hy-gard is supreme to just about any hydraulic oil you can find.

Deere can boast of their oil. They are among the best.

If you are super concerned about the "Best" oil for your Gator then one thing to do is to filter the oil before adding to the machine.
The Deere oil is fine for your Gator.

Just use the John Deere oil. I work at a dealership and I have seen brake linings come apart in tractors using aftermarket hydraulic fluid. Deere hasnt released specs in years so even if the fluid says it meets JD specs, its from years ago. Definatly worth the extra money.
There are some things I use aftermarket for on my JD stuff but hydraulic fluid is not one of them!

I also work at a Deere dealer and I have seen parts fail because of cheap oil. A few extra bucks up front will save you big in the end. And low vis hygard is J20D not J20C. Also if you see any 303 fluid and it says that it meets deere specs, they are about 30-40 years behind the ball.

Bob; That's exactly what I was thinking of as a response. Since you allready said it all I can do is to second that !

Was this the roller bearing against the metal wheel trick ? And did the JD oil hold up as good as the Schaffer ?

Yes, the salesmen referred to them as the "Timken Machines". They used a timken roller out of a Timken cone style bearing. The bearing roller remained stationary while a metal wheel turned on the end of the little electric motor. Resistance was measured with an amp gauge.

The Shaffer guy, after being beat on every single oil said "This little machine is not capable of showing the true qualities of my oils. It is on a preliminary field trial." I laughed.

Don't go telling every one about John Deere oil ,,when they use TSC and other 'wierd' brand oil it's good for my busness :) I still have a few farm payments left....

okay guys - it looks like it is JD Hygard...there also seems to be a lot of JD employees on the board and I would rather those the business their way, as opposed to a competitor...thanks for your feedback guys- tstex

Carquest has a replacement for John Deere J20C. The part number is 760-01. As of Jan 6, 2012 runs about $14.00 a gallon
