FIT Where to get parts for an MW dyno?

Frank, I was thinking that you owned a P400 dyno. If so have you had to fetch service parts? I just bought one. It seems to work but has been stored outdoors for some time. The main readout functioned somewhat at the beginning but now fails to really operate. The tach does not work at all. Where would you suggest getting gauges?

I see M&W still exists in some form, but say nothing about dynos on their home page.

Is all the callibration done on the large gauge? How about an operators manual?

I hooked it to a tractor before purchasing. Ether there is a hole in the core or there was some water already in the oil. I may be pulling the core first thing. I guess I"ll drain the watery oil then give the bare core a shot of water to see if any leaks appear. At least it was cheap.

Hi guys:

Yes, I have a P400. I probably have all of the operators and parts manuals that I could scan and send, but I have not gone as far as looking into getting my main dial re-calibrated. I know that it is off a little bit, so I set it using a known quality liquid filled pressure gauge, along with the working tachometer, which I have calibrated with my electronic digital unit. I have known folks to get the coils repaired at a radiator shop, as they only have to hold garden hose pressure, and even then the other end is opened up somewhat, depending on how hot you want the water to exit. The main dial is a "Chicago Helicoid" brand, and it would be good to know what is available out there as to service and parts.

Frank, Dont go to any great trouble, but if you dont mind I would love to have any pages of the operators manual that are important. Pages that cover capacites and such. I have used dynos before, but never one this old. The dyno that I have used in the past was much larger and used a digital read out.

I was wondering what type of oil to use? I was hoping that the manual would cover such. Also how warm is safe?

Ken, I've searched every way that I can think to find the discussion. Do you know the name of the topic? If you know how to find the discussion please pass it along to me.

Thanks!

Okay, first, here is a thread where we were discussing a place that could repair and calibrate the main gauge:

Don't know if they might have a lead on any other parts sources. If you find any, post it back.

I have the 40 page manual for the P-400A "Hydra-gauge Dynamometer for Maintenance, Operation, Service, Parts, but most of it is charts for tractor makes and other advertising. As I read, I will add to this post. Says do not exceed 180* on the oil temp, (I like about 140# becuase it tends to keep everything else hotter than warm and while it is not boiling, it does move off some moisture). Says to fill with 28 gallons of Texaco Regal B-R and O hydraulic oil or equivalent. Tank must be filled high enough to completely cover the cooling unit, because if it not, the exposed coils can be cool from the water and can cause condensation to run off into the oil. BTW, I know a lot of people used JD Hy-Gard, or universal hydraulic oil from TSC in their M&W"s. Dyno gear box gets 90W gear lube or 120W if used in a hot climate. Blow water fittings with compressed prior to cold weather storage.

Additional approved oils:

Texaco Regal B, Type R & O
Standard Oil Co.: Stan Oil 15
Union Petroleum: Tracto Anti-foam Hydraulic Oil SAU 20-W
Pure Oil Co: Puropale RX medium
Gulf Oil: Gulf Harmony 47
Farm-Oyl Co: SAU 10-10W Hydraulic Oil
International Harvester Co: Hy-Tran - Type A
Also can use Type A Automatic Transmission Oil

That's what I know now. This book has exploded views and parts lists, too. Let me know what you need. Not sure when I can get to it, but I'll try.

At the bottom of this link page it says they have parts for P400's, but I think they are in Australia. But they might know of a domestic source.
Dyno sales

mw-gear.com is still in Gibson City, IL, but the website doesn't offer dyno manuals for download.
Three years ago, I called 800-446-5158 and they
sent me a P400 manual free and still have some,
but not all parts. At that time their price on the water/oil heat exchanger was $1,700; we soldered up a lot of pinholes in ours.

I hope you find this still true and a help.

It wasn't too long ago I just saw an ad over in the classifieds for parts for these for sale.
Someone regularly puts an ad on there.

Thanks a heap Frank!!

I spoke with one of the service guys at M&W. He emailed me the parts manual and an operators manual for a P400B. Mine is an A. We'll see what the difference is. I hope it is close.

I've wanted my own Dyno for quite some time now. I didnt find the cream puff that I wanted, but I think it will work.

A bit of bad luck this afternoon.... The oil sump lid blew off today on the interstate somewhere. I dont know how in the world it came unlatched???

found it pretty easy with the search feature ad #
