Unstlyed A Cracked Wheel

In the process of moving my rear wheels tonight, one of the wheel centers broke. The three pieces that the colar clamps over are what broke off. They had been bubble gum welded at some point in the past, and I obviously overestimated their strength. Its frusturating because I only had another 1/2 inch to go and the other had moved so well, but ya can't change the past so now I just have another project.

I'm in central to north cetral Indiana, so if anybody knows of any individuals who can weld these back on RIGHT, please give me their name.

I'll put some pictures on tomorrow when the light is better.

Thanks

try marlyn smith at 712-89-2570 nights for a part. give him alll the numbers off the pieces/rim that you can.

All three broke off, this is only 2 of them.

So there is what my wheel looks like. Is it fixable?

Thanks

I bought a JD BN on steels 3 months ago with exactly the same problem. 3 tongues on one wheel and one on the other. I was quoted £800 per tongue for gas fusion welding but ended up having them welded by a reputable local company. It didn't come cheap! The rods cost £200 and it took a day at £40/hr. - £500 in all. It appears to be a decent job and the wheels and collars work well. Fingers crossed for the show season next year. Best of luck with yours.

I wonder if a foundry couldn't sand cast the old hub and make a new one? Might even be better than the originals when new.

ha.. If I was near you I could weld it up. I always do alot welding with sticks and wire feeder. I would use stick weld on that. what needs done here is to clean all rust off till you see pretty silver on both sides then heat up very hot before welding.. be sure you have it hold in place right. that's how I do it.

Just put the wheel back together and forget about it. As long as the 3 bolts are tight it will be fine.

Ya know, the wedges don't look like they broke recently. They aren't shiny breaks. You answer does make conceptual sense to me too. They will still hold their place and the bolts will hold the wheel against it.

Now I feel confident that welding will be sufficient because those tounges shouldn't have any stress on them when the clamp is on.

Thanks
