Spark Plugs Autolite 3116

Hello!

Does the length of plug matter in a john deere 2 cylinder? I have Champion D16's that fowl alot. They dont have much reach. Many people have suggested an Autolite 3116. Does this plug have a longer reach? My tractor still runs like crap and is getting very annoying. I know its not the carb, The mag throws a decent spark. The only thing I have left is plugs. Any thoughts?

Thanks and God Bless
Jeff

I run 3116s in my 1940 B and have never had one foul, it just used in parades. Just a while back it came a rain and got water in my carb which I found out when I went to start it. After several cranks on the flywheel it fired off. I don"t think the champions would have done that.

Plug wires have to be solid , not resistor.

sounds like you have carb problems, possibly just have the adjusting screws open to much. if you do that will foul any plug. turn them all the way in and back out each about 1 1/4 turns and then adjust from there. be sure to wait a full minute for each adjustment you make to take effect. just take your time and it will work out

I have the new style plug wires. They are the resister type. Should they be changed? It looks like a good spark from the mag. Should I still change the wires?

Thanks and God Bless.

Autolite 3116 is non resistor plug not really longer to hurt anything works fine just an extended tip hotter plug equivalent of Champion D18Y. 386 & 388 are resistor types you don't want with a mag. Use metallic core wires like others said even if you are running a battery distributor gets more fire to the plug!

Unless you are listening to AM radio on your tractor, operating a longwave Ham Radio transmitter. Or communication with the control tower at the local airport.
You do not want or need resistor wires. Even if the ignition system had plenty of power. Resistor are something that eventually fail sooner or later. Often gradually with hard to find phantom faults.

Even Champion does NOT recommend the D 16 in lettered series tractors unless the machine is in heavy use! Unless your tractor has high compression or has been stroked and is tuned precely, a D16 might foul if left idling in a barn fire! I've seen late A's at PLOW CONTESTS or PLOW DAY DEMOS foul out D 16 plugs! If yer gonna run D-16's in a stock lettered series JD, you better have everything up to snuff!

Today Champion recommends the D 21 for normal use and the D 23 for light use.

I like the D23 but it's a big brute and won't fit in all tractors! On an H for example. D23's don't fit nicely under the plug covers. Have to wiggle them around to get them behind the guards even on an early styled A!

Around here (a parts wasteland) I have to pre-pay and order them by the box full because nobody stocks them. They're not cheap but they last very well for me.
