John Deere Model B

I have a chance to buy a 1938 or 39 John Deere model B tractor. I don't know much about these, but it has the two tanks on it and I think one is for gas and the other for kerosene. It is hand start, he said you turn it too fast it doesn't start as well as a little slower. He said their is a just right speed on starting it. Anyway, it is in good running condition. The brakes on it have recently been relined. Tires are little dry rotted. Paint is good, except horses tried to take a bite in a few spots. What would it be worth in today's economy. Thanks

Paid $700 for "Uncle Earl" our 39B as was where was.

Drive <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIjNH2ghdTA">"Uncle Earl"</a> at least once every weekend.

Looks great! The tractor I am looking at, looks like yours, except it has solid wheels. He wants 2500 for it. I just don't know much about them, not like I do the Ford 801's. Thanks

Originally bought the rear cutoffs from the young man to use on another tractor.

Went to get them and he wanted to show me his Model B that he had started "cleaning up".

Young man said he had lost interest in the project about 5 years earlier and that the tractor needed to go.

Tried my best to talk him out of selling it to me; but he said he would sell it for $700.

Told him that we would be back during Christmas holidays to get it.

Called him a month later and he said that the tractor was still mine and that he had not changed his mind about selling.

Tractor belonged to his uncle, Earl, and that the tractor was running when parked.

Finally "Uncle Earl" got to the top of the priority list after 2 years.

Use the 39B for raking hay and tours around the farm.

Also makes a good <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bb9YsZ0eHZo">flag</a> holder.

If it looks like that then it's a 1939. The 1938 didn't have the "styled" sheet metal and grills. If it looks like "Uncle Earl" and runs perfect then maybe $2500. If it has a NICE set of full round top fenders that would be a PLUS also. If none of the above applies..$800 - $1000.

I couldn't get the photo of the lift arms and rear of tractor to load. The lift arms look like they have been put on there recently. They are rusty and need to be painted.

The tractor looks later than a 39. notice the gas caps further apart than on a 39 or 40. it is at least a 41

Here are a couple of things that I noticed in your photos of this tractor.

The brakes are a later style than on the 39B/40B; take a look at the right brake in last photo of "Uncle Earl".

The oil test cock should/could/might be/probably is on the left side under the flywheel on the 39B/40B.

Other differences are just normal "farmer tech".

See if you can get the serial # from the ID plate and share it with us.

Hope this helps.
