Help! attaching sickle sections for a 1219 MoCo

Hello all,

I recently purchased a 1219 MoCo. I pulled the knife out and am replacing all the sickle sections as they were in bad shape. I also removed the bolts used to attach the knife sections. Now I am trying to put new bolts in so that I can attach the new sections. Well, I am having about a 33 % success rate. Basically, the bolts are shearing off as I am installing them. The bolts are JD parts. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but it's going to be an expensive proposition to finish the job! Any help is appreciated.

If you have a pair of ham-hocks like mine for hands, try using a torque wrench, tightening to a torque value specified for the grade and diameter of the bolt, to keep your enthusiasm under control.

BTDT but on a NH.

If you are trying to pull the bolts into the back rib with the nuts, that is the problem.

Drive the bolts into the rib with a hammer, then put on the sickle section and tighten the nuts. There is a special tool for doing this but I have always used a hammer.

OK, that makes sense. You described exactly what I was trying to do (pull through the knofe back by cranking down on the nut). Will try the hammering approach.

Thanks!
